I am in need of career advice, I have lost all hope that tomorrow will be a better day. I have worked for the same employer for over 15 years now doing basically the same job and sitting in the same office for the past 12 years. About 6 years ago things took a down turn only to get worse and never recover. I have went from being busy and feeling fullfilled to having no work or assignments and with absolutely nothing to do or occupy my time for the better part of 6 long years.

I have mentioned my situation to a few friends who have said wow that must be great to be able to go into work everyday and get paid to do nothing and not even be expected to do anything. To some that may be a great situation but its not for me I feel like I need to be busy and be productive. I am bored out of my mind. I have even took that dreaded step of sharing my concern with a couple of my Supervisors whom I discovered don't really care that the office is not being productive.

I would enjoy nothing more that to move on to a new job or new career. The problem with that is my current employer pays very well and provides great benefits and I am the lone provider for my family. Given that I am stuck with no hope that tomorrow will be a better day. I am thankfull that I have a job and that I am able to provide for my family I just wish that somehow I could find happiness or even just to be content at work. Any suggestions?
Thanks for this!

if you have nothing to do at work why not use that time to learn something new? learn some new software or a language or read a lot. write blogs or articles. it sounds like no one their would care and you would still be a good provider.

Maybe it is time to move on. While you are sitting there doing nothing at work you could be sending out your resume to other companies. Welcome to Psych Central!

Personally my solution to that kind of job is a good MP3 player. Even two of them, so that when one is recharging the other is ready to go. Language tapes never really did much for me, but I would listen to books that helped me learn new ideas. I also used the desktop computer to play subliminals (http://www.subliminalmp3s.com/ has silent versions, and I figured anything my coworkers heard wouldn't hurt them. Everyone can use more harmony, more peace, better luck, more money). The thing is, I regret that I didn't get certification courses and other things like that that I could put on my resumé. I lost my job due to budget cuts and had nothing to show for it.

I agree about updating your resume and looking elsewhere just for interest, and take online or classroom courses. Learn new computer skills, write a book, or learn a new trade.

Not to scare you, but when I was laid off there was less and less work to do everyday until finally there was no need for me!

Peace & Hugs,

TnT
