A little back story first: I am married and my husband, two year old son, and I live with my parents and 3 siblings in a one family home. I recently started a new job (2 months ago)

My mother just decided this weekend to give us a date we need to move out by; June 1st. I am happy she is finally putting her foot down to give us the modivation to move out, however my husband and I can not afford our current area.. It's just way to expensive... We have the option to move out east (which would be very far from work and we would have no family close by) or move upstate where we would at least be close to my mother in law. We have decided to move upstate. I work for a big retail company that has stores all over including 2 in the town we would move to, however I just started this job and I haven't even finished my training yet. 5 months sounds like a long time, but for a big move like this it's really not.

When and how would it be appropriate to try to ask for a transfer?

I would ask your HR department. Are you in NYC? Not being able to afford the city is a fairly understandable thing. I LOVED living in upstate NY, Ithaca was where I lived for several years. Where upstate are you going?

Right outside NYC on Long Island, taxes here are ridiculous! We are looking to go to the suburbs of Albany, cost of living is so much more manageable!
