Alright sound a little history on the subject. About a year ago I started thinking about stepping up, but I wanted to coordinate with my store manager to get where we felt I should be. Well i'm there, but complications are starting to arise. It's the 1st assistant job I want and we have one who's letting life get the better of her. I'm positive my boss wants to move me up and her down. I'm just waiting for it. Well another store is having managers out on medical leave and I got borrowed. Well my area manager kept hinting that she wanted to transfer me over there permanently. They have a good 1st assistant and a good store manager. It's got to be me or my 1st assistant to get transferred and after thinking I realized that if I get sent, I lose a shot at being promoted for at least a year. The flip side is I will be garenteed the promotion if they send the 1st assistant. My area manager said she'll probably leave it up to my store manager, which I believe will pick me to stay. It's just alittle bothersome waiting to find out.

I would definitely talk to your store manager, reinforce how much you want the job and maybe even vaguely threaten to leave if you have to wait another year; it sounds like you are in a large enough company that other companies like yours have similar problems and they might be interested in bringing someone obviously good in from "outside" for a little fresh air (and it would keep from having to disappoint anyone unduly as you would not be one of them yet).

This move, if offered would be lateral? I'd drop a hint to your manager, that you are interested in a promotion, and ask what do the promotion opportunities look like, going forward? Or even, next time the area manager drops a hint, drop one back, stating, if it came with a promotion, I'd consider it.
Keep us posted, good luck!! |
