I work part time at a fast food restaurant for the Summer, I work 4-5 days each week and never ask to switch shifts or for days off, yet I'm also being called in extra days because some people are "sick."
When I say "sick" I mean the weather outside is nice and they don't feel like working or they have a sore nose or something stupid, I'm sick of it, I need some days off too and wish some others would just grow up and get on with it.
I've given up answering my phone from work on my days as I now have a permanent contract and can't get fired for something like that, I know that's not really the right thing to do but I have plans and need to help out at home on my days off... which I've told my managers but there's only one of them that actually cares about that, the other 4 couldn't care less.

I'm not really looking for any replies to this I just needed to write it down to let it out.

Denis, I've been in the very same boat in the past. It's frustrating and maddening. Good for you for looking after yourself.

Why don't you answer the phone and be very sorry but you're not available. If they can be sick when they should be working, you can be not available when you are not scheduled to work. Always think about yourself and what you are learning? You don't want to learn to "avoid"? That's just another form of lying (the other person having to assume you are not there, when in fact, you are but don't want to work). Don't let the actions of others wreck your own character/credibility.

Good for you. Use the caller I>D. If its them, and you have other plans, Don't Answer the phone! Need some hours? Then by all means answer. Employee turn-over and attendence is a constant struggle in the fast food industry. Try not to be distracted by others poor behaviour. Do your best, and set limits to your availabilty, or else they will crush your personal time and spirit.
Thanks for this!
