Got to get this off my chest. I'm a pharmacy technician at a mental health outpatient filling pharmacy. Recently our pharmacy has been cutting hours of techs, especially temps (of which I am one, but my hours haven't been touched yet). While hours have been decreasing for techs, our workload has spiked significantly, especially for orders that MUST go next day. I'm only one of two techs tomorrow to fill a bushel of orders that will have to go the next day. Plus with all the orders come relentless phone calls that inhibit me from entering in new/refill prescriptions. The facilities will be screaming at me because they didn't get their meds, they don't want to hear excuses. I have very little help right now and it's falling on me.

Sorry for the ramble, but I feel like I'm expected to do everything. I've heard about realistic vs. idealistic, but the idealism IS the reality. Agh

That sounds really sucky - expecting you to do more with less. Is there anyone to talk to about it, maybe to point out it could be a safety issue?

Nope, my bosses have set up this schedule by design. It's not a safety issue, since I just work most of the day at a desk. But I'm the only tech who will answer phones AND enter scripts, we're that short-staffed. They may tell me to do my best, but they know the clinics don't give a crap they want their meds no excuses.

You can only do what you can do. Do what you can and refer the angry clinics to your boss. It seems to be the way the workforce it doing these days and it puts so much pressure on employees. I feel for you.

Well, despite my best efforts, today did turn into a dumpsterfire. The good news was I did get some help. The bad news: the help didn't come until 9:30 AM around the same time I came in. Our pharmacy wants to get everything out in the afternoon (or as much as possible). Well not a single order had been entered for 2 hours prior to my arrival. Worse, our boss organizing the orders put the MUST GO on back burner and didn't correct until nearly 11:30 AM So I had 2 hours of inputting stuff that wasn't priority. Hopefully everything gets out otherwise I get to hear about it. Yay

I'm seriously thinking about applying for another job. The situation is beyond out of control. We are unconscionably understaffed and allowing techs time off while we're getting pounded with orders upon orders and all the evening people (including yours truly) are expected to get it out or else. It's one thing to be overwhelmed, but when you're feeling like you're being set up to fail, forget it.
