I think this is the best place for this thread..

Basically, I'm feeling pretty defeated.

I have been wanting to be a RN since I was 13 years old. Now I am getting ready to apply to school and don't think I will be able to get my license because of my criminal record. I have both a juvenile and adult record of theft. I know, I am a GREAT person.

I have a few options, but all of them suck.

I could go ahead with school and work with an attorney and hope that the board of nursing grants me my license with the possiblity that all the work will be for nothing.

Or I could not and try and figure out another career that doesnt require a state license.

On one hand, until I get my license I will feel anxiety over my future if I go ahead with school. How will I put my all into my school with the future of it so uncertain.. knowing it could all be for nothing.

It is all I think about. I spend hours upon hours researching online everyday. I don't know how much longer I can continue this...

Hello and welcome to Psych Central! Have you checked to make sure that your record would go against you? I think it would be good to talk to a lawyer, if it might, before you get all the training.

Do nursing jobs such as an LPN also have such requirements? If not, then at least you would be doing some aspects of nursing.

How about other medical jobs?

What would be involved in having your record expunged? I know someone who had a criminal record who, after going through school and demonstrating she was on a good path, was able to do that.

I agree with the posts above. IMO you should ask a hospital what is involved in the background process and are nurses not hired for theft. You won't be working with money, finance, cash registers etc. so that's a good thing. My Dad hired for wal-mart logistics and I know they did not hire if there was a background of shoplifting. He said it was really a shame because most of these crimes were commited years ago when the applicants were teens. Also, most of the logistics team don't work with money it was just a company policy.

I had an interview to be a pharmacutical rep. In the very first round I volunteered that I had a DWI and possesion charge - they never called back. It's off my record now, but I was let go from a job at a children's shelter for the pot charge. It was humiliating.

Peace,

TnT
