Just wondering if anyone's illness interfered with their career to the point they were asked to take a leave of absence. This has happened to me and I feel I've been off long enough to return however no response yet from admin.

Hello, Ruzie, and welcome to Psych Central! Yes, I know someone who was asked to "take a break" because of his depression. And I gave up my career as a college professor before I was told I couldn't teach any more.

It's been a year now for me and I'm still having a difficult time coping as I was so used to working. I worked on this job for 17+ years. I was told I could try and come back after I got additional treatment, however it's not looking very promising. Some days are harder than others. My therapist told me I must get to a point of accepting my illness as I've never done so. I keep hoping that there will someday be this magical cure but in actuality my heart tells be I'm deceiving myself. I know there is such a thing a being stable, but it appears when faced with stressful situations this is when my exacerbations tend to occur. Any pointers on how to how to handle the loss of my job and accepting my condition for what it is?
