Hi. I got a job in feb this year from the college I used to attend (had my degree in 2010). I friend the manager on linkedin and asked for help from the used to be CIS dept chair and gave her my resume - it hit his desk about 4 times. i love my new job, i am a temp, long term, and there's opportunities to learn. well, i found out how as a temp how i am very limited to certain things in the help desk area because there was a security breach last year in the IT dept.

this job is long term and part time, the pay i get is more than a grocery store's job. i have been saving my paychecks and putting money away so hopefully i can move out later on. part time or not, my freedom is more important than anything else. i am trying to plan this carefully since it is part time and budgeting my money correctly. i will be contacting this nonprofit who works with my credit union on personal finance. my parents have no idea i am working, they still think i volunteer at the library and don't plan on telling them about my job? why? so i can hear something negative like everything is paid for in the house (big lie)? this job is giving me lots of access and freedom this will be my escape route.

my credit isn't good, i got debt student loan and credit card debt. student loan i need to finish the program not gonna worry about that right now, but i do want to tackle the credit card. my idea is to sell something or find something to sell (not sure what, i got books in my dad's storage), i dont want to do payment plans but i do know that can help build credit. i just want them off my back for good. both of them don't know i am working too. i just don't have a plan ready to figure out how to pay the interest back on my student loans plus i was told i would have to pay $1800 for the class i failed twice.

i told my boyfriend i will not settle for a crappy neighborhood don't care how cheap it is but i want something decent in a nice neighborhood (already found those in another city that fits my monthly income). this is the first time ever i am getting paid bi weekly and i was thinking about doing something to get more money in between. not a 2nd job, a guy i work with has a 2nd job and i am seeing how it is taking a toll on his body (he's in my age group mid 20s). i lost my state insurance but was told to reapply yet there's this bs going around in the state i live in about certain populations getting healthcare as i will get a letter about it later on. i don't want anybody to cosign for me, heard too many relationships/friendships broken because of those like a death sentence!

my health is top priority and i don't plan on getting a 2nd or 3rd job to stay afloat especially when you don't have insurance to make sure you stay at least healthy! i am gonna look for apartments in person during this summer when i get more paychecks, so i know what each apartment complex needs. I spoke to God about this and told him the same thing I told my boyfriend. I know people will say now you got a job, go fight for your freedom and that's what i intend to do! boyfriend and some people would say i am moving too fast, i told them i don't plan on staying here any longer. now that i know what i didn't know growing up, i am utilizing that as part of my growth. i am gonna speak to my social worker tomorrow about this and the new update for her.

any suggestions?
Thanks for this!

What suggestions are you looking for? Sounds like you are taking the right steps and on your way.

i quit volunteering well sometimes i go back there to help out as i am bored in the mornings with nothing to do until the afternoon when i have to go to work. well, i was thinking am i doing this correctly taking steps to free myself and finding a place of my own later on? i have been thinking what if some apt complexes say they want to see me on the job for 9 mos or a year? i have been to apartment hunting with my boyfriend's mom last year and got a good education on it.

i mean the fact this is a temp long term job, can i actually sustain myself? it's not easy trying to find a board approved job at the college, but i do get emails from district about what's opening and none of those jobs i have the education or skills to do them. i just want to make sure if i am carefully planning this goal as i want to be able to take care of myself as an adult (actually be an adult) and not having to go back home if something goes wrong with my finances.

Your volunteer work can be counted as a job plus no evictions is probably all they need. The volunteer work counts because it shows stability. You can also use your landlord as a ref.

There are never any guarantees . If this is the job you want go for it! Every job is a step to the next job. Plus temp is not so bad. I've been doing contract for years. The hardest is working out insurance. Trust me there is no job security in rft work. My best advice for anybody is to look for >career< security not job security. Job security is a dead end. Sounds like you are headed in the right direction!

i live at home, the rent is not under my name. well, nobody in the building is under a lease anyway. i would never use that slum lord as a reference she is not here that much and i am not home enough to talk to her besides nobody likes her. technically, i did quit volunteering because i was tired of it not because i hated it but because having zero finances wasn't helping me. now, that i have money, i am thinking of doing a bit more to keep me busy in the mornings before i go to work in the afternoon. another place i would like to do is volunteer at an animal shelter short term.

my temp job not on contract this is through a college where i graduated from not working at a temp company doing work for their client not that kind. i know it is a long term situation. looks like i may need years on the job before i can get a career job every full time job wants a lot of experience so they feel you "know what you're talking about." hmm, yea seems like i am heading in the right direction. well, my plan this thurs is to speak to a financial advisor at the women's center (no cost) and have him help me develop a plan.

When you apply they aren't going to ask you whether it is a temp or contract or rft job. They just want to know where your pay stub is from.

Congrats on the job. Rule of thumb is income 2.5 more than monthly rent.

Hope you are able to get yourself, to where you want to be
