i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this.. or if it's okay to post this.. but i'm really scared and need some input.. can i be fired due to mental illness.. if my mental instability resulted in me doing something stupid like coming to the office at 3am to retrieve my wallet i left in my desk.. because i needed my health card in it. i set the alarm off accidentally and because i was rather medicated couldn't get it off right away.. i was able to eventually disarm the alarm.. get my wallet.. and lock up on my way out.. but the alarm company was notified.. and now my bosses know i was there at 3am.. and also think i was drunk.. (which i wasn't).. i'm just really scared of losing my job. from what i've been told it's very difficult to fire someone with mental illness/addictions/etc. but i'm still worried

technically they cannot fire you for being mentally ill. you have the americans with disabilities act to protect you. this doesn't stop companies from finding other reasons to fire you. if they think you were drunk, just be honest with them. take care.

It's the right place

Whether they fire you is dependent on the rules and the laws in your state. A lot of states have "at will" which means employees have very little rights. If they don't want employees there at 3am they should probably use badges. Why would they know it was due to a mental illness? You only need to tell them you needed to get your wallet. If you have said anything about illness I don't think I would. If they think you're drunk and are concerned they can give you a drug test (which does not mean you disclose any meds).

Reason would say if you have never given them reason to doubt you they will just forgive the incident. You can laugh off the 3am part with being quirky or something. Einstein was up at 3am all the time. Tell them you're related.

I think Michanne has it right. I've set off alarms at workplaces because if I *think* about the alarm code, I forget what it is No one ever asked if I was drunk or ill or anything. Good luck, hopefully you don't have anything to worry about!
