I have been back working for six months now and I feel I am doing really well, but I have run into a problem. My work requires me to maintain complete scheduling flexibility. The constantly changing schedules are really taking a toll on me..
Has anyone requested reasonable accomdation at work? I don't want to divulge all my struggles, but I feel I would do so much better if I could maintain some balance in my schedule. |

I have in the past. Retail is well known for this. The environment has probably changed but when I was in retail full time we agreed to the same two days off. Your hours the rest of the week might vary but at least you could plan those two days. Some jobs do require a flexible schedule but I do think having the same two days is fair. Of course I don't know what your job is. If they needed to hire people don't they pretty much eliminate anybody with a family?

There's no harm in asking them for more consistency in your work schedule. If they value you as an employee I imagine they would love to help you out.

here are the criteria for mandatory accommodations under the ADA:
1) the employer must have at least 25 employees to be included in the Act 2) the employee must be able to perform the Substantial Duties of the job with accommodations 3) the request for accommodations must not put an unreasonable financial burden on the employer that being said, you do not have to reveal the exact diagnosis of your disability, but you may be requested to state the nature of the impairments: ie. 'stress related sleep distubances due to disrupted sleep schedule' the exact wording of the request is important. here is an approved example: I am requesting an Accommodation for a Disability Related Functional Impairment under the provisions of the 1990 Federal Americans with Disabilities Act.* (mandatory) Specifically, due to increased stress from sleep deprivation caused by changes in scheduling, i am requesting that i be exempted from working between the hours of ( 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. ??). Please respond to this request in writing within 30 days of its submission. i hope this works for you. best wishes~ Gus
