Last Wednesday I had a second interview (in person) for a position. It followed a telephone interview a week earlier and went really well.

When I inquired about the timeline for a decision I was told that they would know by the end of this week as they want the position to start during the week of the 8th.

I sent thank you notes (by mail) to both managers who interviewed me on Friday and haven't yet received word back.

I would think they would have told me earlier than Thursday or Friday of the week before if they expected me to start next week. I also realise that one or both managers could have taken a few days off for labor day.

Is it too soon to worry and should I call tomorrow?

I think it would be reasonable to call today (Thursday). Hope the news is good.

I called the hiring manager this morning and she said that they had not reached a decision yet and that they wouldn't know until next week. I'm nervous because she initially said "it's only Thursday morning," and I wonder now if I ruined my chance. I interviewed wonderfully but I took her at her word when she said that a decision would be made by end of week. I look over eager now as I had already sent a thank you card. I think what I have going for me is that I am extremely overqualified and I have connections.

That said, this is one of those times when I really feel down about my anxiety because when it overwhelms me I do something to relieve it, like call a week after an interview and then when things turn out a certain way I am plagued with further anxiety due to doubts and regrets about what I did to relieve it. It's possible that the call won't even impact my chances - it wasn't contentious at all - but now I am worried.

Sorry for the long winded reply, I will definitely update you all next week.

You can look at calling yesterday as a negative thing or a positive one. If someone took the initiative to call me about a job I had interviewed them for, I would see it as they were very interested in the position. When the decision is made it won't come down to one phone call from you, though - it will come down to who they think is best suited for the position.

Beating myself up never makes me feel better, rouge. You did what seemed reasonable and according to what they initially told you - that they would make a decision by the end of this week.

Thank you so much for this, Little Lulu. I have been seeing the call as a negative and really feeling down about it but I have decided to see it as a lesson learned and to consider what you've said about it not necessarily being a detriment. I often get caught in negative thought loops and you've helped me a great deal.

It's called being PRO-ACTIVE and it's required in this economy. You did nothing wrong. I hope you get the position!!! Hugs!

I am sorry to hear that rouge. I know your were hopeful about this job and probably disappointed. I always think it would be nice to know why one person was chosen over another so that the ones who were not picked would have an idea of what they might work on for the next interview but usually that information isn't given.

You made it to the second interview so that is positive. I hope you have other prospects so that you can move on quickly. (((rouge)))

Thank you so much LuLu! I kind of see the rejection as a blesssing of sorts. I applied for the position to avoid having to return to the workforce at a more fast paced place. I work in publicity but last year went back to school. I recently left my program in good standing, deciding that my true love is practice and not teaching or research. Since leaving a few months ago, I have been trying to inch back into the fast paced environment of public relations at smaller firms with the knowledge that I'm more than qualified for bigger agencies; I've already worked at all of the largest and most well known agencies. In fact, my interviewer wrote that I was overqualified and mentioned in the interview that she was worried that they would be keeping me from other things since I have already worked at larger firms. I guess now I'll have to go bigger. I have in the past despite my anxiety but I was looking for training wheels ony initial return. Guess the universe doesn't aprove.
