I told my boss I would not work unpaid in terms of attending outside of work meetings and training. He has now arranged an appraisal and I feel sick with anxiety. Is this his way of firing me? I do everything else well, never off sick, no major incidents, highly qualified and experienced and am good at what I do but I have a bad feeling he has come to berate me and fire me. I feel so bullied by the company and they never listen.

if you are a good employee, then you do not have to fear the appraisal...if he is looking to fire you for standing up to him, he will find something petty and there isn't anything you can do to stop him. yu will be better off and less stressed without the job. yu are worth more somewhere else. you have to look at the positives in the long run.

Standing our ground on issues we feel convicted about is important to stay healthy but it does leave us open to the potential 'fallout'. It sure doesn't seem like you would be fired over this, though, unless it is in your job description and your refusal violated that.
If during your appraisal you discover that your position on unpaid meetings is causing problems, maybe there is a way you can negotiate this issue with your boss in a way that works for everyone. |

Just relax and take it easy, just like Kaliope said, if you're a good employee you don't have to worry. They'll see you as an asset I'm sure!

Unpaid meetings ARE illegal though so I don't see why I should have to negotiate with him. I am just very anxious about this.
