Hi its twofaces.

I actually failed my nursing placement in emergency department on monday. This was the final placement before becoming a nurse, and I was a week off from graduation (in second semester in the final year).

At first I accepted it well. The facilitator told me that I did not make any serious mistakes or stepped outside my boundary. It was just that my anxiety gets me so often in this emergency environment that I can't function properly.

I did not fail the course, and it is currently delayed until I finish my next placement.

Now the problem though.. Is that after few days, I see myself not coping with it well. I don't want to go outside anymore, and seeing my friends in placement finishing it and posting for celebrations in facebook kinda devastated me.

I have appointment with the university coordinator of nursing next week, counsellor appointment on next tuesday, and psychologist appointment on next friday.

This is my first 'big' failure ever since failing math in my seventh grade. I passed everything up to now and did well on my other placements... This is also probably one of the reasons why this failure is hitting me hard.

Twofaces, I was pulling for you. sorry for your temporary loss. Were you training to be an emergency room nurse or is the emergency room test part of the test for being a nurse?

Hopefully your meeting will be an opportunity to work out some kind of work around or retesting.

I am in a profession where 95 % of my efforts fail, sales and marketing. It sounds like your failure rate is no where near mine.

Don't take it to heart. It is just a temporary obstacle. You will find a way around that.

That sucks, I am so sorry to hear that you didn't pass the first time. Now that you've done it once, it will be easier to do next time. No one likes to fail, but it is great to have a second chance at this. You know what to expect and what to watch out for.
Thanks for this!

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I'm studying to be a general medical nurse but my last placement happened to be in ED. Created some terrible result when it really wasn't suited for me.. Such rushing environment. I do hope I learned enough from my failure and actually pass next semester.

I had to repeat my last semester of nursing school. It was a bummer because I already had a job lined up. I enjoyed working as a nurse after I finished school. There are lots of different jobs available for nurses to suit our different preferences and abilities.

Hi twofaces,
I can completely relate to this. We are in similar fields (I'm unemployed presently due to heart) but I have had similar situations. Many many hugs to you. I know what its like to not want to even see or even hear others passed. Can you retake the exam? I know what is like when your academic are very important. I am the same. And I hear you that the anxiety can get in the way with our careers and academics. I am pulling for you no matter what. I have been there. Nurses are hereos, and you are a hero, no matter what happens. I worked ER too. You deserve many rewards for you are a good person!!!

Hi, Please do not let testing get you down. Some of the most book smart test takers do not necessarily make good bedside nurses. Use the experience to help you grow your empathy. Nursing is a challenging career and you will face many difficulties. Be proud that you want it so badly! It's great that you are reaching out for support!!! I hated taking exams but I'm proud of the type of caregiver I have become. Most of what you learn about Nursing is only learned through experience anyway. i do recommend learning relaxation techniques and self care. It will be useful for you and your patients. I wish you success and happiness which will follow with commitment and perserverance! Go get that license!!!!
