I am applying for new job and am a little worried about the fact of my psychiatric hospitalization showing up on a background check. Do they show up?how much can they tell a prospective employer? Can an employer use it as a reason to deny employment?

That type of information is not part of a background check and is not available to the public. See the link below for what a background check consists of.

I think the only thing that shows up on typical background checks are criminal records. If they want to dive deeper into anything else, they'll usually ask you to sign a waver stating whatever they specifically want to look at. Medical records are private, it's doctor-patient confidential. I think it's illegal for anyone, including employers, to look into your medical documents.

Medical records are private. There are new laws regarding their release. Any time you go to the doctor you need to sign those darn HIPAA forms if you want anything released to anyone.

I thought those forms were for keeping things private, not releasing the info. Darn it.
