I went back to interviewing again not sure what is going on with the sister college but can't afford to wait. Anyway, I have an interview tomorrow morning with a company in IT not too far from me. I am so wanting to move on away from part time I have plans I want to accomplish this summer. Please pray for me...

Didn't know it's my 500th post!! The interview was fairly good one manager was busy looking up at the ceiling both of their phones going off by text messages. Funny, they can have their phones while the candidates can't have theirs. There was a part two but never happen because the other manager was busy in a conflict so they are gonna wrap up and go from there. It's a 6-9 month contract if you do good they will hire you on perm.

I don't know why am I getting so many jobs offering contract and not enough just offering me a perm job skip the contracts? I am just scared of risks is that normal? Life is about risk it amazes how those in businesses take risks while I was always told it was wrong to do so and never really taken a risk in a job. How do I take a risk(s)? I know my brother told me nobody can't predict what's gonna happen.

I would say that if you get a 6-9 month contract job, it is best not to count on that turning into a permanent job. The contract positions are a way that businesses shift the risk back onto the employees and gets out of paying taxes. It also leaves employees uncovered by unemployment, FMLA, health insurance laws, etc.

The IRS has really strict definitions about what qualifies as a contract position vs. regular employee. A company can't legally decide that the job is a contract job in June and then a 'regular' job in December if they like you enough. Businesses do it, but it doesn't make it right from a legal or ethical perspective.

Long story short, your worries about contract jobs being risky are very valid and normal.

It's really hard for me to find a regular job since I don't have all the skills these employers want hence is why I went to a staffing agency to help me yet it's all contract. I really don't wanna accept the position didn't like the body language. I applied to a position with a different sister college geez I'm so desperate these colleges are taking too damn long to get back with candidates.

Sigh. I've told employers the main problem is lack of permissions at work that I can't have access to which is why I want to be able to do a lot more than what I am doing now. My current job is contract to get full time I gotta externally to full times within the college district. I have no reason to stay further other than I'm getting a check.

Good luck today Ladytiger!

And, I wanted to say, about the contract-to-perm, where I'm at that's very, very common in our local IT. I've worked for a couple of large companies, in particular, and because it's really hard to fire an employee (apparently, though I've seen it happen), bringing people in as contractors first is a way that we can see how they work before committing to them. It's a pain for people, of course, but it should have some benefits, doesn't it? When I was a contractor (long ago), I got put on a huge project and worked a ton of extra hours (voluntarily). I was putting in close to 80 hours a week at one point... and getting paid for all of them! As an employee, I get a salary and don't get any extra payment for working longer hours. So, there's that.

(My company is also heavily unionized, and contractors do not get sent out as "replacement workers" if the unionized workers go on strike. The rest of us get periodic training on a "second job" that's totally unrelated to what we do, and if there's a strike, we have to go fill in! It's scary, because it involves crossing picket lines to get to the job, as well as working really long hours away from home. So, in this regard, I'm a tiny bit jealous of our contractors who don't have to deal with it!)

Lots of good thoughts for today, hope the interview goes well!

I'm glad the interview felt good ladytiger

I think most of us kind of stumble at some stage of an interview; just means we're thinking and making sure we answer questions accurately

Yea much better interview. Never heard back from previous employer oh well. This interview was much better. I am still getting contract jobs in my email nothing seems to be guaranteed anymore these days. This company seems to be very ideal for me as I need training to increase my help desk skills.
