So ill start from the beginning i was living in nyc and working a part time retail job plus a housing allowance from the GI Bill now my GI Bill is finished and Ive decided to move back to my hometown in Texas to continue school since its free. So heres where it gets complicated I don’t know if I really want to go back to school its always been hard because of my bipolar I would pass my fine art classes and fail most other classes. Im not sure if I really want to do college anymore because now I have to work full time enough money to support myself AND go to school OR live at home pretty much for free and go to school but I DONT want to live at home Ive always been very independent (although my mom would love it) ON TOP of all this I can’t find a job that pays enough even full time for me to get an apt because you have to make 3x the rent so i would have to rent a room. Im grateful I had an interview for a well paying beauty consultant job today but its only 17 hrs a week if I do get it and so i would need another job, this Interview was 3 hrs away btw! lol honestly I don’t know how many times I can drive back out there.
I really need to get away from craps job but Im not good at anything but art and makeup.Ive been thinking about graphic design again but these days you need to know web design and Im not computer savy enough to learn it, I struggled with the adobe software ( tho I was VERY depressed when I was in school for this)…Sometimes I think I should say “F” all this and move back to NYC and just get a job there and live in a room for $650…I miss NYc…Sorry if this is long and confusing…

IM just in a rut right now I don’t know where I should live and if I should go back to school and I have no income right now ANY advice would be helpful thanks so much guys!! Also I’m going to be 28 soon and that upsets me greatly!uuggghhh!! I HATE MY LIFE!!!!!!!!

Hi artsygirl. Thank you for your service in the military. I appreciate your sacrifice. You might want to reach out to a veterans group for support. Many people in the military, even non combat, can find PTSD a problem in adjusting to civilian life.

NYC is a tough place. Even rooms can be 1500-2000 per month. It is overwhelmed with immigrants.

Parents are usually happy to have you live at home (ie free) while you go to school. Maybe that is tolerable. Texas does not have a good safety net. Here is a school that can give you credits for work experience in the military.
Excelsior College | Excelsior College

Not sure if that would be appropriate if you are going into graphic design.

Glad you are joining us here. There are lots of compassionate people here that can make the load lighter by sharing and caring. Feel free to participate actively at Psych Central.

Hello there, hmmm do you have a passion for art and make up? because I would definitely go for that if you like that.
It seems like you really don't want to go home and like you said, you prefer to live independently. So perhaps work and go to school rather then go home and go to school?

Whatever you choose, I hope it goes well for you.

Look into cosmology or the make up/skin stuff as a career, traditional college probably isn't the best route, look I to trades.

From personal experience, a new city does give on a fresh start artsygirl. I've moved so many times I've lost count for a number of reasons. Please don't lose hope that things can and will change

Thanks for your comment,What sucks is that Ive attended cosmetology school twice and It didn't work out. although the first time I wasn't on meds and the second time I can't remember but honestly Im not the most outgoing especially when I'm depressed so I don't know if I would be successful at this career BUT I do have Hair styling skills...I do makeup on the side but I need something to pay the bills

I think you really need to sit down and brainstorm jobs and careers you actually want that are lucrative. It sounds like you don't know what you want to do, and maybe it's because you haven't researched enough jobs out there. You should search on google a bunch of different jobs pertaining to different fields like healthcare, beauty, marketing, law enforcement, universities, etc. There are hundreds of different jobs in each of these fields to choose from. Start making a list of what type of environment you would like to work in, for example, office, outdoors, hospital, animals, clinics, retail, etc. Then ask yourself this question - do I want to be standing or sitting mostly while I work? You need to ask yourself these detailed questions in order to narrow down your search. Use the internet to look up job websites for any openings in your area. You should take advantage of your free college and go at least part time and get an associates degree or bachelors.

And if that job is really 3 hours away, then no, obviously that is much too far for a job that is only part time. By the way, the 3x rent rule must be a new York thing because I've never heard of that being an actual legal rule. People usually say you should make 3x the rent but its only a guideline or advice or "should", its not something that you have to do, at least not where I live. You can also get an apartment with roommates, just make sure you screen them well and they are compatible with your personality.

Ask yourself what you want to be doing in 5 years - is it cosmetology? Really ask yourself and think hard about what it will really be like. Many times the idea of doing something isn't the same as actually doing it. I learned this the hard way when I went to school for phlebotomy - yikes.
