I've just sent an electronic application for three jobs. I haven't worked for eight years due to serious, life threatening mental illnesses. I'm in a financial crunch so it makes the pressure greater. The jobs are low-key and part time/casual. I had a pretty high flying career but don't aspire to getting back to that level again. I'd just like a little job. When I'd not been working for about three years I tried to go back and it failed dismally and I had to resign. But I didn't come out unscathed and got really mentally ill and had to have a big new med introduction. The pressure is so bad to get a job. I don't want it just for the money but also social contact, job well done, self esteem etc.
Any thoughts from anyone who has been in a similar situation to me? |

I was not away from work for as long as you but I took off work for about a year or more due to anxiety. When I went back, I did as you are planning - I took a less demanding position. Going back was difficult but it did help to return to a job with less stress. I also had a good counselor and I joined a support group, both of which were very helpful in getting back into the world of work.
All along I felt it was important for me to at least give it my best shot to return to work or find something meaningful in my life for the very reasons you mentioned - not only money but also self-esteem, accomplishment, socialization, etc. I understand where you have been and why you want to go back to work. I hope you find an opportunity that feels right to you. |

Well said Lulu...I agree. There's so much more to work than just the money. Accomplishment and self-esteem are my top two. Yes, depression has derailed me, and after being a cashier/retail person for over three years, I'm comfortable and am branching out a little. Good Luck!

Go for it! Good for you! And...well..if it doesn't work out what's the worse that can happen? You got paid for a few and are a little better off than before...

I wish you the best, Discover. The truth is, just getting that steady check, however small will be a step. Plus, like me....if you run across complete fools in the workplace, you'll have lots of good stories for your friends and family to marvel at!
