My manager has requested to have access to my work inbox.
I'm friends with the guy in IT who told me she has asked him to give her access. I've got nothing to hide at all but I just don't see why she NEEDS to? She's not even mentioned anything to me. What would she be looking for? I hardly email I'm feeling really paranoid now that's she's trying to find something bad to hold against me We don't have the best workin relationship. I'm fairly new been there about 4 months. I find her very stand offish and unapproachable. When I ask her a question she's very blunt and makes me feel silly for asking. She's like this with most people Confused lol |

She is trying to gain access without your knowing about it? I think a lot of companies reserve the right to look at your email; so make sure you don't write anything they can't see.
Would you feel comfortable telling your boss what the IT guy said? "IT guy said you are asking to see my email. I'd be happy to show you myself. Would you like to do that now?" I'd be inclined to do it that way. |

She's said nothing at all to me about it. So without my friend telling me then I'd be none the wiser. I'd be worried to say the IT guy said it as I don't want to get him in trouble. I just have no idea why she would need to see my emails is all? |

The company I work for automatically has access to everyone in the company's email address. It does seem strange that she is being secretive about it though. I wonder if maybe she is checking everyone's periodically and its not just yours. I wouldn't stress about it though especially if you don't use it that much like you said. |

I presume you have schiz. So that's something you know could be a source of paranoia. Personally it does not make sense to me. Im not saying that you're brain is playing tricks on you , you have a right to be believed when you say something as clear as this. But thread carefully , given your history. So , why does your manager want access to your email? Surely he has told you? |

I agree that it's weird your manager hasn't mentioned this to you. I'm in IT and have given managers access to employee mailboxes. It sometimes has to do with measuring workload or making sure requests are getting the attention they need in an appropriate time frame.

Working office , I know a thing or 2 about IT , that's my Degree. Your email could be potentially have been used to receive emails where a separate dedicated business email address should have being setup instead. E.g liveservices@companyit.com . The truth is that if your manager wants to see emails that are relevant to him , then he should see them as a cc , bcc to his own email address. If he wants to see other person emails , he should be going through admin , and he should have a good professionally sound reason for (btw you should generally be unaware of it). Regardless this is either poor work practice or indeed a decision made using poor professional standards on his part.

I've heard of companies having access but to be secretive about it would make me mad. And you say you guys don't have the best relationship? Could she possibly be so rotten that she's trying to catch you doing something to get you in trouble? That's just my thought. But I'm also pretty paranoid about my own work environment too lol

I'd be bothered for sure but not let on. Meanwhile I'd take a glance at job boards just to see what is out there. I know employees emails can be viewed by personnel but given the tension you mentioned, I'd be either on extra klonopin or talking myself out of saying something I can't take back. (I'm paranoid too and wish I could just shrug it off but at the same time I want to be smart about the situation as it smells of poop).
