My employer requires travel of its employees a few times a year for training. We travel to the state HQ which is about 3 hours one way. Typically, I am able to travel on my own and claim travel which allows me to avoid anxiety aggravating traffic, being late, relying on others, etc. However, I have a required training to attend in a few weeks that another coworker in my same office is assigned to. My company policy requires coworkers from the same office to travel together to save travel costs.
I understand this. However, I have severe anxiety riding with other people, especially if they're driving. I do not commute long-distances very well. I have some great coping strategies by myself, but when there are other people there it becomes a problem. Especially because I DO NOT speed and I know for a fact that this coworker has multiple speeding tickets. I don't do well with law breaking or speeding. I tried to explain this to my boss but she said I needed a doctor's note. Has anyone ever done this before? I see a counselor, but I don't take medication. I guess I need to see a psychiatrist? A doctor? I do have IBS, so I could I could us that as a scape goat? I'm really not sure! I am going to fork over the cost to travel by myself this next time, but that is going to hurt if I have to do it a few times a year. Because the training is so soon, there's no way I will be able to get that note by then, but I need to definitely get something for the next time. Am I the only one with a phobia of traveling with others? |

My spouse doesn't have a phobia travelling with others. But she gets severely ill (dizzy, sick to her stomach) riding with someone else driving. If she goes, she has to drive.

I agree, can you insist on being the one to drive?
With regard to the doctor's note, I would call your regular doctor and ask for a note. Or ask the therapist. They won't write *why* you can't ride with someone else, just that you can't due to a medical condition. It might not be a big deal to get the note. I also don't like riding with other people, but I can tolerate it. There's one person I won't get in the car with because they drive so badly (either they are drunk or it is the effect of long term alcoholism). |

Yes, I would try to get that note from your regular doctor before the training happens. They may be able to turn it around really quickly actually. I actually also get really sick if I ride in the passenger seat with people, and I get a lot of anxiety riding with certain people because of the way they drive, very unsafe.
I hope it goes well for you. Seesaw
