I started a job at a large corporation today. Excellent pay, close to my home, the position is in a field that I'm currently studying in school and enjoying. My previous job was as a barista in a small coffee shop, I miss my old job and the family I had at the coffee shop but this is the next logical step.

I slept well for my first day today and I spent longer than usual making myself look professional and I am so happy to be taking this next step in my life. But walking around in the office, I couldn't help but feel like I was drowning. So many new faces and directions and my mouth got exhausted from fake smiling at everyone. I'm 22 and I am scared like hell that I'll be in a cubicle for the next 30 years of my life. I respect the generation who could devote that kind of service to a company, maybe its because I'm young, but this job feels like a huge commitment. The department I asked to be placed in is supposed to be "fast-paced" and yet I sat around all day and the whole office was silent and people quietly tapped away. Maybe I just set my expectations high...

Most millennials will have jobs that last 2.5 years, Gen X it is estimated at about 5 years and Boomers it is 8 years and up at the same company.

Things are changing. People will change jobs more often than in the past. We may be moving towards an economy run by freelancers. Just keep your skills up to date and keep your eyes open. You don't have to stay in one place forever

You're new, learning takes time. You don't have to stay anywhere you don't want to be, but you may decide you love it there. You don't generally make friends instantly. Just get to know those you work with, and go from there.

sounds like going from a warm cocoon to a huge, cold place.

You'll get used to it and I encourage you to enjoy it. One day you may end up in a job that pays about the same or a little less that treats you like crap and works you to death. Just watch other people, learn new skills in your department and always look for open opportunities within your company.
