I was fired from my job last week. It wasn't working well at all for me, or for my employer, so I'm glad that it's over. I'm also thankful for the severance pay as I was seriously considering just quitting myself.

I need to update my resume and start looking for work (right away), but I'm scared at how the next few weeks are going to go. Unscheduled time is a huge trigger for depression for me. It's tough to keep my depressive thoughts at bay without much to do, and with being so recently fired. Feels like a very tangible 'you failed'.

I am trying to use coping mechanisms such as exercise and focusing on doing the things I enjoy (that are free..), seeing friends, and scheduling my days - but I'm just scared.

Same for me, and I once sat "paralyzed" for about a month because of all of that. Do your best at updating your resume' and maybe even spend some time Googling various job descriptions for your kind of work and/or its related or support positions. My own goal there would be along the line of being well-informed and well-versed in discussing all of that and/or answering questions during interviews...and I say "interviews" while assuming or at least hoping you will be granted several so you might even be able to make your own selection rather than having only one possible choice.
Thanks for this!

I am job-hunting, too, though I'm still working. Long story short - the grand poo-bah doesn't like me and wants me gone but can't outright fire me. They've put me on probation. I'll probably be fired in 90 days regardless of how hard I work to turn things around. Anyhoo, if I were fired and had my days free again, I would do job-hunt related stuff for a few hours in the morning to get it out of the way. Update the resume, search online for jobs, call up placement agencies, etc. Even if I don't accomplish much, I've put in my time. Then I would do something enjoyable in the afternoon and evening. Coffee shops are good places for me to go to get stuff done. I'm less likely to goof off in public, lol.

I don't know if you know anyone who has a farm. It sounds goofy but my cousins have a dairy farm and when I was unemployed I spent a lot of time out there it's only a 25 min drive. They appreciate the help and toss money your way . Just being outdoors and working helped me sleep at night.

Try and make yourself a schedule and stick to it. Unscheduled time is a huge trigger for me too with my depression.
