If the things I dream about are not career-related, is it OK to choose a profession with a promise of a job and a good salary that'd enable me to realise those dreams in my free time?
I often get the impression from people that choosing a job based on money is like a cardinal sin.. :P |

That has been more or less my approach. Like everything, there are pluses and minuses. I often daydream about a job I dread less... but my hobbies would not be fun as poorly paying jobs!

I decided on a profession based on its job outlook and what I felt I was good at. I would have picked a different more creative profession if I felt I could pay the bills with it. But, I am following my creative pursuits outside of the job and have made side money with it. I dream of leaving my job and doing that work full-time if I can find a way to make enough to live off of it.

It's not a terrible thing, but don't chose a profession you honestly don't like and/or don't have the skill sets for. Money doesn't make up for hating to go to work every day!

I think it's actually smart to choose a profession based on the growth of the industry and the prospects for job safety and salary.
Just make sure it's something you at least have an interest in, so you're not entirely miserable at work.

Money isn't the only reason, but I think it's an important one. At the end, very few people like their jobs. As long as you don't hate it, you will be fine.

As long as you make sure it's a good fit for you, go for it!
