My company had layoffs last week. About a dozen people I know were let go including my boss. ~120 overall.
I'm finding it even more difficult to care about anything now. I had been putting in a lot of long hours on a big project, but now I just don't really have much respect for my company or the management. I find it difficult to focus on work when all I can think about is "when will it happen to me" but also "why didn't it happen to me instead?" Those of us who survived now have more work to do, because the positions are gone. We've all been killing ourselves already. And I really like my boss, but now she's gone. She's the worst part in all of this. She made it possible to go to work when things were just not going well. I sent her an email but now am feeling bad that I couldn't do more for her. I hope she'll find something she likes better but I'm sad at the prospect of never seeing or hearing from her again. So now I have to find a way (and time) to refresh my skills a bit in preparation for what will likely happen again. I wish I could go back in time 2 weeks, when everything made a little more sense. |

Layoffs are hard even for those left behind. I was laid off a couple of times and had to just pick up the pieces and move on. I missed the people I left behind and I'm sure some missed me. But I moved on whether I left are it was someone I liked that left. You will too.

Hey @gayleggg. I've been both laid off and survived layoffs. Neither is fun. I'm going to take this as a gentle hint that I need to focus a bit more on my career, skills, networking, etc. I don't have a lot of respect for my company right now, so can use the leftover energy to help me get better.
Hopefully the rest of my department will take the same action and prepare themselves for whatever may come. A lot of them have been here forever and haven't even tried to improve their skills. Won't be a good day for them, but they have time now. The rosey glow has warn off for them. I hope. |

Keep in touch with your former boss and others that were let go. They will appreciate you giving them support as they look for new jobs. I did this in a previous job and later, one of the let go employees helped me get an interview (and job) with her new company.

Oooh, yes, staying in touch with former colleagues is a great way to land a new job! 120 is a lot of people to go at once, it must be hard to be there.

Were these permenant. I have been laid off before and called back. How long did they have to work after being told they were being layed off, that can be hard.
