I am doing work placement at a nursing home and I am almost finished. Today I was feeling pretty good about it and thought I was doing well considering the severity of my anxiety, but then one of the workers made a comment about how quiet I am and that I should talk more if I want to get a job there.

She wasn't being rude or anything but it made me feel so horrible and upset. I have barely had any interactions with her. I spent the rest of the day feeling depressed and worried. Now I am really worried that I will not be able to find a job after placement is finished. I have tried to make an effort to get a job but I feel like I will never get one. It really hurts to know that I have tried but still am not good enough.

I guess she was trying to be helpful with that comment, but it really isn't useful to us with anxiety. Don't let that one comment change your mind about how you are doing on the job. Keep doing the best work you can and look for ways to show them more of you have to offer. If you are doing great work and always looking for more ways to help, people will be interested in hiring you.

I wouldn't let it bother you, but it's hard not too. I'm not a socailizer I have a job to do. In some jobs your expected to be involved and social. I think the job you are doing was a good fit because of the independence. I know you feel there is something wrong with you but really there's not It's who you are and some employers like people that are qiute. If you like the type of work your doing and have experience pursue it. good luck!
Thanks for this!

That's interesting. I have a sister who is an LPN and another who is a CNA. One of their biggest pet peeves? People who spend too much time socializing instead of doing their job.

I'm not big into socialization myself, so I can understand where you are coming from.

I think if I were you I would accept that is her opinion but it's just that - one persons opinion.

Other people may not share her opinion. Many people appreciate quietness, it quite often comes along with gentleness and sensitivity - good traits within the care sector I'd say.

This coworker of yours isn't the manager so as far as I'm concerned, her opinion doesn't mean jack.

So what if you're quiet? It's not like you're working in customer service.

Personally when I'm doing a job I want people to leave me the hell alone and let me focus unless what they have to say is directly related to the job.
