I'm trying to find a term to describe a 'tactic' used by management where (for example) the company has granted employees in my department the right to work from home due to COVID-19.
Recently one of the employees that was not granted this right due to the nature of his job complained stating it wasn't fair to them!? As a result the acting Director has cancelled working from home for all employees due to this one person complaining. A typical targeted tactic on every employee designed to get the majority of employees angry at the one employee as a reprisal to the one who complained and as a warning to employees not to complain. Normally a reprisal as this, in an attempt make the complainer 'persona non grata' amongst their colleagues is taken as management 'gamesmanship' but in this case it undoes a 'social distancing' measure to help people from the need to be at work during this outbreak protecting peoples health. Not cool! What is the term for an authority figure revoking a privilege for a group because of a complaint by one or more in the group as a reprisal with its intended consequences? |

You could call it a few things: triangulation, retribution, bullying.

It doesn't quite fit the situation perfectly, but scapegoating is another term that comes to mind.

Whipsawing is something else, sort of like double whammy, get you coming and going. You might be thinking of whipping boy, but that term doesnt really apply either, as no royal figure is involved.
Management didnt do this to "make" the rest of you feel anything. I cant believe this guy opened his mouth and told his boss the situation wasnt FAIR. What a baby! Something wrong with him to begin with. Eta - boy somebody woke up cranky after their nap today! Sorry! |

In this situation I would think they didn't really want people to work from home and this one whiner became their ticket to revoke it for everyone. At least that is the mechanism most frequently used where I work. But then where I work has extremely little regard for people as individuals.
