Does anyone know if when a person quits drinking, and the first few days find it hard to sleep? Is this a common occurence, like a withdrawal symptom?
Thanks for any answers in advance.

A good friend of mine was a three beer a night drinker a few nights each week. When his first child arrived he had to give up the drinking as he wasn't able to be a responsible parent if he couldn't drive in an emergency situation and his reaction times were impared.

He cold turkeyed and his only complaint was the first few nights of sleeping difficulties. He's been a non drinker since.

Good luck and you're kind to be inquiring for a pal.

I know when I stopped drinking, it was very difficult to go to sleep. It took me a long time in order for things to get back to somewhat normal. Of coarse now I have other problems that make it very hard to fall asleep. I was getting only 3 hours a night sleep and they said something had to be done because that was not at all good for my major depression. Looks like I have all kinds of troubles doesn't it. But life is still so much better being clean and sober now. It was just hard going through all the withdrawls from drugs and alcohol. But I made it and so have alot of others. Just takes some work and determination. Wishing the best.

my understanding is that this is one of the most common side effects of giving up alcohol...but as the good book says..."this too shall pass"...you're very brave to take this step...don't give up....love grace

Yea,
lack of ability to fall and stay asleep is a very common symptom of alcohol withdrawal. The good news is no one ever died from lack of sleep. Exercise, good diet, no naps during the day, and no caffeine will also help.
Like they said, this too will pass.

From your post, I take it you've put down the booze? I just want to say Congrats on that! No need to answer the question, everyone already has. lol It was actually difficult for me to fall asleep for months after I quit drinking, but then again, I was also on meth, so my sleeping patterns were very twisted. Best of wishes to you.
