I've been sober since August 1, 2007. I maintained the first three years of my sobriety with hard-core AA/NA meetings, service, sponsorship, etc. I was super involved in the program and loved it.
Since my resurgence of mental illness three and a half years ago, my path has widened, veered, twisted, turned. I was in a 16 step program which was amazing for awhile, until the funding got cut. I've been back and forth with 12 step meetings but ultimately I haven't been able to recommit since mental illness took over. Regardless of what I think about mental illness, without a doubt my sobriety has been the one thing that's enabled me to face it. I can't imagine what my life would be like today if I was still loaded. And yet I know how fragile it is, how it could all disappear like a dream or like mist if I pick up that first drink or drug.
I congratulate all of you today, whether you're struggling or not, but especially if you're struggling. Just for today, try to remember why it is that you got sober (or wanted to get sober) in the first place.
Thanks for this!

great feedback, spondi!! i know my bipoar would have never been harnessed had i not been sober and vice versa. but we can get better in both areas. we just need to be vigilent to take care of our challenges.

Yet your commitment to sobriety has never waivered ... only to the various groups, whose availability changed (or vanished) depending on funding. It looks as if you wanted to keep hold of sobriety from Day One.

yoooohoooo

Been staying away from the drugs and last December I dumped all those bottles that I had in the fridge that were just sitting there.....i can't recall my last drink right now, but alcohol I never preferred any who

Oh how I still sometimes think of the days back then...... Depressed and using whatever to get away....
Work issues again but I'm thinking more these days on how to move on from the place than a quick escape.

How are you?

I've been sick six weeks, doc forgot to give me antibiotics. One cat died, unknown reasons, second Wednesday because she had kidney failure, she called but I couldn't find her.
Maybe I am dying. Doctor has no answers for me. Antibiotics do nothing now. Can't go to work. No one now--I'm alone. If I had any energy, I'd clean out the place & drive to New Mexico.

Your thread does help a lot, Magisgram. Whether alcoholic, addicted to other drugs,
sugar, wheat, whatever, the 12-step program is a positive and vital help to many in
overcoming human weaknesses.

Thanks for your thread and your wonderful help for many.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment genetic. We have a saying in AA- in order to keep it, in our case sobriety, we must give it away...meaning to help others and ironically we help ourselves too by doing that.

Yes, I believe that, too. I've read years ago that "whatever we do to or
for others, we also do to ourselves." Wise material.

Here's another one: "Everything that we say or do that demeans another human being records itself without exception in the unconscious mind and causes one to despise oneself". That's enough to make me alert to almost everything I say. It'll stop us dead in our tracks when we really think about it! There are times when I need to think about it more often.

I've heard it said that in many cases, people are unable to love themselves. Maybe that's part of any addiction; I don't know. Wonder what others think about that?

I have a saying posted on my mirror that says "You are looking at the problem" and I see that every day. I put that there when I was early in the program. Now I don't feel AS MUCH that I am part of the problem since I've been sober so long. Yes, I still have to work alot at the program, and I don't MEAN to say that I'm perfect. But now I have the tools I need to work the program, and when there's a problem, I know what it is much sooner than I did before. But that sticker is going to STAY on that mirror as long as I live in case I FORGET and get too cocky in my recovery!!!

I too believe that in helping others, we help ourselves. And we DO have to love ourselves before we can love anyone else.

I think you're exactly right, as are Madisgram and others who post regarding remission
of alcoholism or other addictions.
