I go to AA and find it helpful, but I struggle with the higher power concept. I'm reading a really good book, that's helping me a lot. It's called "Waiting A Nonbeliever's Higher Power". It's by Myra Hornbacher who is a great writer, and it tells the story of how she came from a place of non belief to having a faith of her own. It's really well written and it's really resonating with me.

It's published by Hazelden.

She also wrote "Sane" Which is the best book I've ever read about dealing with mental illness and addiction through the 12 steps.

Thank you for sharing that. I hear that a lot, that people won't go to AA because of the higher power issue. I hope others find the book as helpful as you do.

so sorry you are struggling with addiction; The 12 step ideology has predominated the
field unjustly. It becomes hard because if one has a clear relationship to
some God/spirit/ something concept they are okay, but when
they feel abandoned, or strongly identify as non-believer, they are left with
their addiction to wrestle on their own, especially hard for those who are court
ordered to use 12 step.
Thank you greatly for sharing this.

thanks for sharing about those books. i'm sure others will benefit from the info.
i struggled with the higher power thing too in early recovery. i wanted to believe but it wasn't there. how could i really believe he was there for me? others maybe, but not me. one day i discovered the miracle. i have no idea what caused the transition other than meetings, my sponsor, the lit, etc. a dear, dear friend bought me the booklet/AA approved, came to believe. it helped me a lot. i was so grateful it happened for me. then i knew i was never alone.

I struggle with having faith in a HP/God. It dose keep me from working the 12-Steps. I still go to an AA meeting once or twice a week just to be with others in addiction treatment. For now, that's where I'm at. Its better than having nothing to do with AA.
