I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, since it's not an abstinance only group, but I am trying out Moderation Management. I've gone six days now without a drink (I'm doing the thirty day test)--I even made it through a happy hour and a date without a drop. that was particularly difficult for me because I used to rely on alcohol to "loosen up."

just curious if anyone who has tried MM as an option? a lot of people go on to AA after trying it. I'm testing the waters for myself...

My therapist gave me a moderation management contract worksheet last time I saw him. I looked at it and thought, there's no way I can do this. It's easier for me to just not drink at all than to keep myself to one or two drinks. So I haven't looked at it since.

keep us posted suki. i'm familiar with MM. i chose to go to AA but the 30 day test can help you decide. each time a drug comes to mind you can write it down and keep a list. the list may be long as the 30 days goes by. that info is helpful too. sometimes ppl white knuckle it for the 30 days then use again. i wish you the best.

day twelve and I'm not feeling the need for a drink yet despite a happy hour and a night out. surprisingly, I haven't been thinking about drinking that much. I'm feeling a little more like my old self, where I can take it or leave it rather than feeling the need. I'm only a third of the way through so we'll see how it goes.
Thanks for this!

That's great progress! I hope it continues to go well.

I'm with you, AniManiac: Give me no drinks & I can handle that. Let me have one or two and promise me more tomorrow ...

Naw. I'd want to kill the bottle tonight & skip tomorrow.

Best going, Suki22!

Hello Suki
There is the twelve step.
S.O.S.
Smart Recovery and
Rational Recovery and
Moderation management.
\ Strange as it sounds to me to be saying this, the AA has a better deal:
they are well organized enough to show to meetings,
the are not 'hiding the ball" , where as the others have very hard meetings to
locate and who has the info on where to meet becomes
nearly an act of congress.
I have been through each, and have polled people who have,
the debate is, "AA may not work, but the others don't either "
was the response I got.
I think the issue is, if you have a system, a support net, and a commitment,
you will succeed.

Sandee

checking in on day 27. it was a little rough last week with my coworker out unexpectedly four days so I was really feeling the need for a happy hour drink one or two of those days but overall the 30 is going really well. I'm starting to see that I can apply MM to other areas of my life which is uplifting. I'm tackling one problem at a time, thirty days at a time. I may just continue on without a drink to see how long I can go. the MM website has been a huge help!

Not a bad idea as its worth to see that living life as it comes can be done alcohol free.

SMART Recovery meetings are indeed few compared to AA. Yet SMART is well organized, is easy to find meetings and the meetings are easily located from the SMART meeting directory.

True AA, SMART, SOS, MM and RR may not work for everybody. But then again, no one recovery program may be appropriate for everybody.
