I have about 9 months of sobriety. I am going to about 3 AA meetings a week and have a sponsor. I just seem to be on a roller-coaster with my moods. There is a definite pattern. I will feel good for 2 or 3 weeks and then it's like the bottom drops out. For no reason, I will feel terrible and want to drink for about a week. Then I'll be ok again. Is this normal? If it is, how long does this usually last? I'm tired of all the ups and downs!

yep that's what u're on-a roller coaster. when we first get sober we are flooded with emotions cause we previously stuffed them and used an escape-alcohol. by sharing this at meetings you will receive the support you need. those of us in recovery can relate to feeling that way in our early recovery. you may want to consider more meetings a week too. it can reinforce a positive way of living.
give yourself the opportunity to embrace your sobriety. change the ways of dealing with adversity. it's not the emotion that will get you, it's how you respond to it.
glad you posted.

There's a book you might find helpful. It's called "First Year Sobriety, When all that Changes is Everything. I forget who the author is, but you can order it from Hazelden. When I first got sober I was on an emotional roller coaster too - my fist year I felt like I had 2 emotions, rage and despair. I've been in and out of sobriety for a few years now, and every time it's the same, difficult emotions come up that I have to learn to deal with. It does get easier with time.

Hang in there you can do it.

Thanks! It's good to know I'm not going crazy. I have a very hard time sharing at meetings but I have been talking to my sponsor about this a little. I do have that book already Splitimage. I was reading it a month or so ago, but maybe it's time to start again. Thanks for the help!

How long till you make nine months, hopefultoday? I hope you'll stay in touch & let us celebrate with you.

I'm so glad you're here & posting. I'm hoping you'll find ways to "post" at your AA meetings too! Connecting with others at these groups will help build support networks that will serve you in ways you can't imagine now. I just made a late-night call last week to someone I met at my first AA meeting after I jumped off the wagon feet first back in '91...

She's my sponsor now.
