The following is from Days of Healing, Days of Joy - a Hazelden book

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm"....Ralph Waldo Emerson

Apathy is deadly. In the same way that caring is a sign of life, apathy or indifference suggests that emotional exhaustion is nearly complete. As long as we care, the flame still flickers and we have a chance. We may not be able to act very effectively on our problems, but as long as we care we are still able to take action.

Sometimes apathy seems to fall over us like a smothering blanket. Often it overtakes us when we are depressed, or when we've faced some situations so painful that we just don't have the energy to throw them off and lift our spirits. At these times it is helpful to picture someone or something we do care about. When we think about people and beliefs we hold dear, we can poke the dying fire to life by prodding the glowing embers of our concern. Like the sparks from those embers, our emotions too can crackle back to life. We can draw on the love around us to re-energize ourselves.

I can move out of my concern for myself and instead focus on those who are special to me. I will let them know I care.

I can certainly attest to the fact that apathy/depression sucks the very life out of you and you don't care whether you work your program or not. You don't think about sobriety or even life itself. You feel like a slug.

If you've been sober a little while, you don't allow yourself to stay this way long because you know how dangerous it is. The danger of apathy/depression is that we're not thinking clearly and it's a prime time for a relapse. So getting busy and back into the program full speed is the best prescription!! It not only will chase away that danger of relapse, but you'll get out of that apathetic & depressive episode too. Plus getting into others helps - we can't keep thinking about ourselves. We do that much too often as it is. Thanks for letting me share.
