Hey all,
I started using inhalants when I was 9. By the time I was 14, I was severely addicted to anything and everything I could huff. Almost 8 years ago, I decided to try to get clean. For 7 years, I'd cycle hitting 6 months clean, relapsing for 2 weeks then going back to being clean. Finally I went into rehab for it because I was tired of trying on my own. I currently have 10 months clean now, currently in the Narcotics Anonymous program, and worked the 12 steps. I've been lucky in this time I sheltered myself and have been able to control all the environments I've been in to be able to stay away from anything making an appearance*unannounced.* Of course, I'm worried about eventually going back into the real world. One of my relapses started from having a long shift at work while they were painting the building, something I was unaware of that was happening until I got there.* I'm looking for people who huffed that have multiple years clean to give me some advice on how to stay clean for multiple years. How do I protect myself in the work place especially? How did you stay clean all these years?* Thanks -Mike PS: To any of those that have multiple years clean and are a former inhalant user: If you are in Narcotics Anonymous or AA, and are open to being a sponsor, I'm game. I've had a sponsor and worked the 12 steps, but he has disappeared on me. This time I'm specifically looking for a former inhalant user to assist me in dealing with things like what I've mentioned. Thanks ![]() |

i don't have any experience in this area but would probably consider having a confidential word with your supervisor, making them aware of your concerns and letting them know how they can help you by letting you know in advance if your work environment is going to be painted or any strong inhalents are going to be used. that way you can take holiday or sick days to coincide thus avoiding them.
