Days of Healing, Days of Joy

"Life Guarantees a chance - not a fair shake."............................Bernie Y.

Life is not fair. Most of us know that, but few of us accept it. Something in us often clings to the idea that, ultimately, the gifts will all be evenly divided. Mostly we want to be paid back for the injustices of the past. Many of us adult children expect - no, demand - redress from fate. We think life should "make it up" to us somehow. That's why it's so hard for us to go on discovering, again and again, what we already know: Life is not fair.

The good job that should have been ours, the accident that crippled a loved one, unwanted childlessness - these things are not fair. But life is like soil, not like seed. The chance of a harvest is there, but only if we plant the seed. And even then we may not get the harvest we expected or wished for - not on our own timetable. It is an act of faith, and of great courage, to keep on sowing seeds when we don't know what we're going to get. But it's the only chance we have. We need to stop expecting the soil to provide the seed.

I think of those immortal lines from the movie: "Once Upon a Time in America" with Robert DeNiro, James Wood & Elizabeth McGovern: some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths & some people get it up the ***!"

I drive back on the interstate after going out to lunch, and I look at all the cars jamming for a chance to change lanes at speeds much higher than the legal limit, and then I look up at the sky and the beauty of nature all around the interstate and think, "how can anyone be in such a hurry in life to put aside the beauty everywhere in things not man-made?".

We live too much in the world of "right now" or "never". And doing so, we miss peace.

As for seeds, not only must we plant, but we must fertilize, water, break soil
around them, and often mulch them to get the really good crop we want. Life is a
lot like that, in my view. We may not have been given a perfect life, and life may not be fair, but as Lee says, it's our chance, and we do with it the best that we know how, generally.

When you reach my age and look back, it has all been--in the long run--better than
I could have planned or designed or created or anything else. Something Greater than we are is constantly at our sides helping thoughts to materialize when we try, I think.

Good post, again, Leed. Enjoyed it.

Thanks for your post Leed but it is way to hard for me to read. It's like you were talking to me but I know you just put this out there for everyone who can relate. Well, it is all too painful for me, devastating really, to accept that life has always been and will always be unfair. The realization of that is too much.

Michelle ~ Read what it says at the bottom: "This day offers a chance for a fuller life, and I will accept what comes of my efforts."

Life is what we put into it. If we're not willing to work for a better life, we won't GET one. But if we work hard, and strive for a better/fuller life our chances are much better that we will achieve something better than what we have.

Hugs, Lee

life is fair, we all are given life when we are concieved then we all get it taken away when we die. it is the things that we are dealt with in between that are not fair!
I tend to think of it along the lines of because i have been dealt x it means someone else has been spared from having to deal with it themselves, also it is the things you have been dealt with that have shaped who you are, if you had been dealt different things you would not be you!
