I don't know if this is the right place to put this. But I have been taking percocet for a while now, and it is nothing hardcore just one or 2 every night for a few weeks. But now whenever it gets to be around this time at night, my body really hurts until I take one. So I think my body has become dependent on it. The pain will not go away unless I have at least one percocet. I don't want to be in pain, but I don't want to keep taking percocets. I have about a months worth left, but I want to taper off. They are 5mg tablets. Should I cut them in half or something? I don't want to tell a doctor cause I don't want it to on my record or anything.

If you are able to, try a couple of tylenol pm (if they don't mess with any other meds you have to take). Here is why... I've had trouble over the years with pain meds because of a couple of health problems and they are nothing to mess with. If you are only having a little discomfort at night from not taking them then try something to help you sleep through it.
The next day might be a little rough, so just take a couple of tylenol, or motrin to get you through it. The problem you are experiencing should be gone the following day.
Taking a hot bath before bed helps a lot also
Pain meds will ruin your life.
Been there, done that. Not worth it.

hey kris,
a couple of years ago i had to taper my pain meds back and did the same thing you are thinking and cut them in half and it worked for me. Other than that talking to your doctor about a safe way to taper them possibly using another medication in its place. Be careful either way, meds don't need to be toyed with.
peace, sami

Is the pain a long term thing or short term?

If it were me and I needed them short term I would take them as needed until I didn't need them anymore then taper then put up with the short term withdrawal if there is any.

I am a recovering addict but needed them for kidney stones and a couple of other times. I just made up my mind that when the script was gone I would not think about it anymore and put up with being a little uncomfortable for a bit. This was Vicodin and Percocet is stronger.

You would want to be on it the shortest time possible. Only you can answer if you still need it for the pain.

I wonder if the body or brain creates pain falsely to get more of the drug??? I kinda doubt it.

Hey well i am battling with codeine right now. I have been prescribed oxycodone before which i am not on thank god as its sooo addictive. The pure codieine however is making me ill but i cannot stop it. I am also withdrawing from Lorazepam after a seven year addiction to benzos from valium through to klonopin or clonazepam and the hypnotic sedative Zopiclone.

I have this issue where I have to replace one addiction with another so coming off the lorazepam and being zopiclone free and almost lorazepam free, i need something so yeah bring on the codeine, it makes me itch and tremble but i feel sedated and happy-ish

I've had lots of experience with Percoset, multiple knee surgeries. I felt the same way and wanted to cut back on my own as well. This may be not helpful since I guess it is cross addiction, but I took a little more of my sedative medication for anxiety to taper off without feeling any effects of stopping the opiate.

Once I had another knee flare up and got both Mobic (a strong NSAID) and Percoset and again tried to stay away from the Percocet. I found that the Mobic was actually more effective anyway and I didn't have to keep taking it. A few days, it reduced the swelling that was causing pain, and I was better.
