Hey Everybody!
My name is Katie (Kat, Kate... whatever you want), I am 19, and I am new to PC.. and was lead to this specific forum after the support chat tonight (which was awesome - thanks!) Well here is a bit about me and my addiction. A year and a half ago I had a major surgery on my shoulder. Ever since then I have been addicted to pain killers. I take up to 14 a day and absolutely no one but my counselor at my school knows about this. My mom would have a heart attack and it is unrealistic (literally) for her to know about any of this. I do want to get off the pills but even reducing to one a day put me in immense physical pain. (I have a genetic disorder that makes all my joints really messed up). I know that I should go to a doctor but I just cant. I am under my mothers insurance and anything that is billed to insurance is sent in a statement home. I am also scared to go because I also suffer from an eating disorder on top of everything else. I am terrified they will take one look at me with all these issues and send me inpatient somewhere. I guess maybe I am just asking for suggestions how to go about this? It just seems so impossible. Thanks for everything, I am glad I found this site. |

Kat, good news, they can't put you into in patient care against your will (not easily, anyway). The other bit of good news is that there are a variety of counselors and therapists out there that you could see without involving your mother's insurance. For example, if you're in college, try the school counselor. Church? Try them. There's also a variety of programs designed specifically for teens in crisis (on top of general sliding fee psychiatric clinics) and with a little research on your area, they're easy to find.
So I guess that's my suggestion, covert counseling. Welcome to PC! Cyran0

Thanks Chalmette and Cyran0!
I do have a counselor at college tha ti am able to go to for free. She is really pushing me to go into a detox program... she seems to think it is the only way. I will have to look for some of those other suggestions... I am from a small town but maybe they will have something! It is good news that they cant put me into the hospital.. in fact it is quite a sigh of relief. again, thanks for replies =) |
