The Cause of Antisocial Personality Disorder?

. . . Is associating toughness or strength with apathy?

As in they have been through hard times to believe is or just raised to? It would be an easy mis-congruity to make given our culture . . .

What do you think?

By all accounts that I've read, aspd is genetic because they seem to have been born with the lack of compassion.

When they are born with that missing, whether they were tortured as children will have a very big impact on their future.

I've been diagnosed with ASPD along with many other mental illnesses. I was born with lots of compassion. But growing up with two heartless parents and a disgusting family changed me. To top it off, I've had negative experiences with hundreds of abusive people. All of this made me into the monster I am today.

There is a strong genetic link with psychopathy, which is independent of their upbringing and environment. ASPD is environmental.

But I'm not up to beating this horse to death again, so, I can't be bothered to find links for anyone. But it's all out there if anyone wants to do their own research.

That's interesting. What I've read online is that there's no difference between aspd and psychopathy. But it stands to reason there must be a diagnosis for the aspd or psychopath who does not harm others, etc.

The underlying behavior is the same, but the causes are different. They are both classified under Antisocial Personality Disorder, though there has been considerable disagreement over whether they are two distinct disorders or not.

But one, though biology definitely plays a factor in what temperament you are born with - Aspd is more environmental and due to upbringing, whereas psychopathy has a strong biological origin. MRI's have shown their brains are wired differently. Just as MRI scans have shown that people with BPD have smaller but more active amygdilas, which is why they experience emotions more intensely and for longer durations, and subsequently have greater difficulty with regulating their emotions.

Thanks for this. It's food for thought. I have a aspd diagnosis as well as BPD and I'm trying to figure out why. (If there's a reason.) At first I was really angry about my diagnoses because they don't know me. But now I'm just curious as to why.

So true! I have ASPD due to my terrible upbringing. Yet I know 2 psychopaths who grew up with wonderful parents and barely had any negative experiences ... but they're still psychopaths.

ASPD and Psychopaths are not fully understood. I have ASPD, and I don't enjoy harming others. And I'm not a psychopath.

It's sad when many mental health "professionals" don't know the difference.

And some do, or did at one point, and don't care one way or the other. Or rather, for some, perhaps the ability to care just wasn't there to begin with.

My last therapist endorced "fake it 'till you make it", but it's still faking no matter which way you want to look at it.

Maybe all psychopaths have aspd, but not all aspd are psychopaths
