As far as I'm aware, a panic attack can be triggered by absolutely anything. Its possible you have a bad memory involving this smell/sight/feeling.

**EDIT: whoops, Is it possible you have a bad memory involving this smell/sight/feeling?

I agree with eloquent. A panic attack can be triggered by any stimulus, potentially one that you have negative or fear-inducing connotations with.

Hope you are doing okay, love!

I agree. There are so many things. But if I think I'm following you here, maybe your speaking of a thought that maybe you can't remember but your anxiety got triggered? There are things that our unconscious hides from us. It's a survival technique built into our brains to protect us. But we have a link to it through our senses. I have heard a few stories where people have brought up things out of the blue that they had forgotten until triggered. Of course they don't get propelled into an emotional whirlwind like we do, but it does happen. Sorry if this is off topic from what you meant. I hope that the trigger doesn't come to mind and make it worse for you. I know it's hard to prepare. I hardly ever am.
