hey suzzie ... it looked like a good question to me sorry i began responding earlier but had to head out for awhile and only just got back to your thread to reply now

yes I asked my dr about taking them after my ex-therapist suggested them, as an alternative to anti depressants. In my case the dr wouldn't prescribe them because he said my blood pressure medication should already be helping but it could be worth you mentioning it to your dr

what do you think of the idea?

im not sure if i should ask. he doesnt know me really. i havent seen him in several years. im not sure i can get myself to even make an appointment. i dont like going to the doctors for anything. it would be nice to try and see if there was a difference. she said it would help with sleep too.

My T actually talked me in to going to see a psychiatrist for anxiety meds and I've been on them for nearly a year. She knew I was very anti-med after a previous experience, so my T waited nearly 3 years to even mention it and once she did, it got me thinking and we talked about it for quite a few sessions before I was willing to even talk to the pdoc.

About 10 years ago, I asked my GP about something for anxiety. She prescribed an SSRI which was not helpful. As her specialty was not psychiatric medication, she didn't give me many options and just went with the most common prescription and dosage and didn't really work with me to find something that would be very effective.

My pdoc has worked with me over the past year to find the best medication at the best dose to handle my anxiety and it was so totally worth it!

Oooh, thanks, suzzie. I have, but they wouldn't give me any. Either they'd flat-out say no, or shove the conversation in other directions. A thought just occurred to me: are anti-anxiety medications often used by illegal drug dealers and drug addicts? If so, then that would explain why it can be a pain getting them, if asked.

I asked my doc for anxiety meds and he told me no no no about three or four times before my therapist and him talked. Then he freaked out and referred me for meds to a Pdoc. I didn't get actual anxiety meds until late last year. Docs don't like to prescribe the benzodiazepine drugs that actually are fantastic. You have to be super careful though that you don't build up a tolerance or get addicted. Mine are for emergencies only.

That seems to sum it up, pretty well. The thing is, seeing the appropriate doctor and discussing symptoms. Let them, considering, with medical charts in hand, what the next course of action needs to be. My PDOC, if I recall, wanted to know, if I was in talk therapy. Which, I was, when I first started seeing him. And, which, I am now, currently. Since, I've been a patient, of my pdoc, I have gone from a psychologist, as a therapist, to a social worker(LISW), due to insurance coverage changes, a few years ago.

Seeing a talk therapist, whilst, under med treatment, is a plus. Shows, that you are working on whatever it is, that you are dealing with, for a MI diagnosis. And not just, in there, for the meds, so to speak.
