Is social phobia "just" a more serious form of shyness? I've thought I was shy for a long time, but in my first therapy session on Tuesday the therapist told me I had social phobia...I'm still not entirely convinced I'm not just shy. What's the difference between shyness and social phobia?

Shyness is you want and can be around people but you just dont really know how or what to communicate. I believe shyness is a form of social phobia but a lighter version. More extreme versions are feeling actually scared to be around people. You avoid situations that involve groups. You tend to be nervous about what others are thinking of you. And a severe form would be where you literally do not want to leave you house because you dont want to be around people. Im not sure if this has helped so if it hasnt im sorry!

Take care x

Thanks, behndblueyes! So being worried about what other people think of you is social phobia, not shyness? That definitely happens to me a lot...even on here, sometimes. What's the difference between shyness and social phobia?

yeah I am fairly confident that it is. I have it too. I dont like to be around big groups because i am constanty worried about the image I am gving them, or the things i say if they will talk about me later.

blueyes...you hit it right on the nail...I have social phobia and avoid so much fun because of it...I don't go to parties, family functions, even to restaurants because I am so afraid there is someone there who hates me...if only we could not let this bother us so...what others think of us...!

Shyness can be a form of social phobia. It basically becomes a social phobia when it interferes with normal everyday actions and your ability to function in society.

If you're in a group and your mind occasionally wonders to what others are thinking of you, that is more just being shy.

If you are at places and you can't get your mind off how others are looking at you and what they may be thinking of you, then that is a mild to moderate form of social phobia.

If you completely avoid places for fear that they will look at you or are woried what they may think of you, that is usually a moderate to severe form of social anxiety.

Hope that helps some

Thanks, Bethsway, Ickydog and Perna. I guess it is social phobia, then...I avoid places at school I know are busy, like the dining hall, because I think people won't want me there, and I'll be in the way. Although that kind of thing doesn't happen everywhere - I've been to concerts and been fine, I've even played in violin concerts, and not had a problem unless I had to play a solo...strange. What's the difference between shyness and social phobia?

Wow I wouldn't think it's social phobia if you can go out into public like that. Maybe just not wanting to be in crowded areas where you might have to interact one on one with people you know is the real problem? What do you think?

Ugh...I don't know. For violin concerts I can forget that people are even there - just concentrate on the music. People don't notice you as an individual, they just notice the music you play.

I hate being in situations where people expect you to speak, if that's what you mean. With my friends I'm ok, because they know I'm quiet, and they usually hardly stop talking! But at school people expect you to talk (or it feels like they do, anyway), and I always feel guilty if everyone is speaking except me and one other person...I'm worried they'll get bored, or if they think it's personal that I'm not talking to them. I just can't think of anything to say!

Maybe it's school that's the problem. Most of the time I'm ok when I'm away from there. I don't like that place.

(Sorry if I'm not making much sense. What's the difference between shyness and social phobia?)
