I have had anxiety for the last five years but within the last six months it has turned into Social Phobia. Before my anxiety I was a different person.I was outgoing and independent. Now I still live with my mom, I cant drive, and I dont have a job.I cant do anything on my own.In February I'll be twenty two years old,and I still haven't done anything with my life.I feel so worthless.I have been really depressed lately. I have no one that I can relate to and I would love to talk to someone going through this.I am planning to start therapy very soon.I am worried that it wont help. Is their anyone that has been through therapy and it has helped them?

Welcome to the forums,
All of us here have many disorders, myself I suffer from pretty nasty Social Anxiety, and now newly diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. My Anxiety caused my entire life to feel wasted until I finally relised as I got older figured out something really was going on. Yes therapy helps many people, almost everyone on this forum is in some form of therapy, on medications and so on. It could be a long hard effort on your part, but the hardest part is figuring out something isnt right and making the first step to seek help. And that is awesome that you are starting the process. About you personally, speaking from a patients, not a doctors view of course. I find it very different that your social phobia had such a strong onset. I have had mine my entire life, and once looking back can remember all the situations, panic attacks and problems it caused me. Having an anxiety problem in general might of transformed into something more over time, not sure. But on any level everyone here is very informative and supportive. We will always help as much as we can, and wish you all the best in feeling better. Mark |

Welcome to the forums. I might have social anxiety. My T likes that word any ways. When I expressed an interest in researching it for school, my T darn near climbed all over herself to try to help me with it. I said "No, I don't need help with my homework." The next time we talk I will ask her to let me borrow her work book that she recommended on the subject. I suspect that she thinks I have social anxiety. I definately have anxiety that interferes with my ability to fuction at work of a social nature.
I am glad that you are seeking help. They claim that social anxiety and depression is a highly treatable problem. I hope you can feel comfortable sharing with a counselor. It will take hard work and doing social things that scare you. I might have to do some scary social things soon too. Maybe we can do it together in a ways. |
