So like I said in my first post I am currently a freshman at college. Unfortunately however, this has been the hardest year ever. I feel stuck and unhappy everyday. The people are not great, the environment is very superficial, and its really hard for me being so far from home. Whenever I am home for breaks I feel like myself again, I feel happy and energetic and for the most part anxiety free..until it comes time to go back to school. I was thinking of transferring next year to another school in the city next to mine, only 20 minutes from my house and giving that a shot. Everyone seems to love my current school but me and while I think it would be great to stay I just cannot seem to make myself happy here like I can. If nothing else maybe I could transfer and be at home until I sort everything out for myself and get comfortable enough to go away? I'm not sure, has anyone been here or have any good advice for me? Any and all responses would be great thanks so much!!

Okay, well, it's been decades since The Skeezyks was in college. So I can't relate to your situation directly, ItGoesOn. But it seems to me that this is YOUR life & the fact that everyone else loves your school is beside the point. The question is: do you love it? And the answer to that appears to be no. On the other hand, I don't know how long you've been at this school. Since you're a Freshman I would presume perhaps since this past September... so maybe 6 or 7 months? That's not a long time if this is your first experience living away from home.

The question I think you have to ask yourself is: am I just running back home because it's familiar & comfortable? If so, then doing so may only make it that much more difficult to leave the next time something comes up that would require you to do so. Most people, it seems like nowadays, move around. However, I'm sure not everyone does. There are no doubt still many people who spend their whole lives living happily in the same town they were born in. Were they to move away, they'd probably feel as disconnected as you do. So, there's nothing wrong with just living your life in one place, if that's what you want to do & there are enough resources there to make it possible.

Of course, there are also academic questions that come into play. Can you transfer all of your credits? Does the school you'd be going to have a program that would be of interest to you? What are the relative costs per credit? Would you live at home & thus save money? Would this be workable for you?

So, I would suggest, first of all, that you discuss your reasons for transferring with a school counselor & look into the academic questions. Then make a decision. Neither option is bad or good. It's really a matter of where you're going with your life & how you want to live it.

If you're not happy where you are, and you've given it a school year, it may be wise to transfer. I felt the same way when I went away to college. It was so different from what I was used to that I struggled my freshman year. I transferred my sophomore year back to my home city, but I didn't live at home.
Go with your gut. It's usually right.

I am a student in my second year of college and I just transferred from a school where I did my freshman year. I can completely relate to how you're feeling; it is similar to what I felt my first year. I can say there are definitely pros and cons to transferring. But I think what is the most important is being where you feel happy, comfortable, and can see yourself succeeding.
