Today I was having a panic attack and had the sudden urge to hurt myself. I have had a past experience with this type of urge, but never gave in. I find that its getting harder to control myself and I dont know what to do?? Im afraid that one day I'm going to seriously hurt myself. Any suggestions???

what exactly do you mean? It's common for someone suffering a panic attack to pull their own hair or something like that but if you are having urges to intentionally injure yourself then that's something unrelated to panic attacks I would imagine

Hi Katelyn, there's a self injury section of this forum if you'd like to check that out:
Self Injury - Forums at Psych Central There's also a list of things to do instead of hurting yourself (coping skills): http://forums.psychcentral.com/self-...-yourself.html I find journaling helps to realese everything going on in my mind

I meant that the only way (i felt) for me to calm down was to relieve some pressure and hurt myself. I am not sure how to explain it.

Do you meanlmd hitting, cutting or burning yourself? Even scratching is considered self harm.

When the anxiety becomes too hard to control even with the Ativan, I cut. Some helpful ideas are a rubber band around your wrist and pop it really, bruisingly hard. Or hold an ice cube until it hurts. Or ACT where you notice everything around you. I am in my car; I feel the steering wheel; etc.

Yes hitting or cutting. I feel like if I hit myself hard enough I can feel something that will calm me down a bit. I dont know how to describe it.

I've experienced that a little, but unfortunately, I don't have any advice.
I've had panic attacks and felt like my face and hands were numb. I would literally slap myself in the face to try to feel something. I've slapped myself while having disassociation, too. I wish I could offer you some wisdom. Just know you aren't alone. ![]()
