Yes, I've had violent intrusive thoughts even though I'm not violent or want to be or anything like that.

It comes with anxiety, I have some traits of OCD and it's quite common with that. Usually, an antidepressant helps them, mine have been gone for awhile now since being on paxil.

I have suffered from intrusive thoughts on and off for years. My first experience came my sophomore year of college. I lived alone and had no life skills or friends. I had recently ended a complicated relationship and had a self harm problem. The intrusive thoughts were terrifying and went on until I was 23. After that I was free from them until I was 27. They came back when I had another major life change/relationship. This time it was worse. I am now 32 and my intrusive thoughts are currently quiet. For me, they come when I am under a tremendous amount of stress and feel out of control of my life. My OCD now manifests itself as various fixations.

There is nothing wrong with these thoughts. Please don't blame yourself for thinking them. They do not mean you're a bad person, or going insane, or that you will turn into a psychopath or a killer. A lot of us have them, and a lot of us have been living with them for years. I used to have an irrational fear of knives and asked my husband to hide all of them before we went to sleep each night. It's been four years and the thoughts come and go - but I've never stabbed anyone.

If you'll allow me to quote myself from another thread,

Quote:
I discussed this extensively with my therapist, and she assured me that these thoughts, while distressing, are not a sign that I'm going insane or at risk of becoming a serial killer (which I feared). She told me that, the more I try to reject them and "stop thinking" them, the more anxiety they cause because the mind tends to return to them regardless. She advised me to accept these thoughts as they come and detach myself from them.

Don't blame yourself for thinking these thoughts, and remember that even though they're distressing, the simple fact that they are distressing is a sure sign you're not at risk of carrying them out or becoming a psychopath. Psychopaths feel no empathy. They don't feel that their thoughts are wrong.
I really hope this helps. Stay strong!
Thanks for this!

Absolutely. I have GAD as well (in addition to a few other disorders) and I have intrusive thoughts every single day. It sucks, but I just try to focus on good things, and remember that it's just my anxiety talkin'. :-/
Sometimes, it really is scary though, or just disturbing... It's hard to deal with those times, but for me, I just pray. I usually am able to feel better, if not right away, then shortly after.

I have intrusive thoughts but they are not violence, they are self hatred.

I have intrusive thoughts on occasion but over the years have learned to be an observer of them and use them as a trigger to see how to improve my self care and balance. They can be distressing though, for sure. In my younger years I had some very very distressing thoughts. I could get caught thinking about terrible things that were going to happen to myself or other people. Before getting on meds I was obsessively thinking about how I would ruin my children and what terrible things would happen to them. In truth it's a relief to have some respite from those thoughts.

Reading a book on Mindfulness Meditation right now... reminds me of the technique to just be an observer of the thoughts and let them float by as leaves on a river.... I really like Almeera's post - what her pdoc said about psychopaths having no empathy and the truth of it is that we have empathy and guilt about our thoughts.

Hello Pink, sorry your thoughts are upsetting. I've had similar problems but mine center more around OCD. These intrusive thoughts are NOT REAL, but because WE FEAR them; therein lies their power and are hard to shake off. We shouldn't be ashamed or upset, because it's just our minds in overdrive and possibly being triggered at a time when we are anxious or upset. I think it's us sensitive types that have more of a problem with intrusive thoughts. It's only our actions and not our thoughts that can bring about change in our lives. I feel this is a temporary problem for you and will resolve itself in time.
