Yes, I've had violent intrusive thoughts even though I'm not violent or want to be or anything like that.
It comes with anxiety, I have some traits of OCD and it's quite common with that. Usually, an antidepressant helps them, mine have been gone for awhile now since being on paxil.

I have suffered from intrusive thoughts on and off for years. My first experience came my sophomore year of college. I lived alone and had no life skills or friends. I had recently ended a complicated relationship and had a self harm problem. The intrusive thoughts were terrifying and went on until I was 23. After that I was free from them until I was 27. They came back when I had another major life change/relationship. This time it was worse. I am now 32 and my intrusive thoughts are currently quiet. For me, they come when I am under a tremendous amount of stress and feel out of control of my life. My OCD now manifests itself as various fixations.

Absolutely. I have GAD as well (in addition to a few other disorders) and I have intrusive thoughts every single day. It sucks, but I just try to focus on good things, and remember that it's just my anxiety talkin'. :-/
Sometimes, it really is scary though, or just disturbing... It's hard to deal with those times, but for me, I just pray. I usually am able to feel better, if not right away, then shortly after.

I have intrusive thoughts on occasion but over the years have learned to be an observer of them and use them as a trigger to see how to improve my self care and balance. They can be distressing though, for sure. In my younger years I had some very very distressing thoughts. I could get caught thinking about terrible things that were going to happen to myself or other people. Before getting on meds I was obsessively thinking about how I would ruin my children and what terrible things would happen to them. In truth it's a relief to have some respite from those thoughts.
Reading a book on Mindfulness Meditation right now... reminds me of the technique to just be an observer of the thoughts and let them float by as leaves on a river.... I really like Almeera's post - what her pdoc said about psychopaths having no empathy and the truth of it is that we have empathy and guilt about our thoughts.

Hello Pink, sorry your thoughts are upsetting. I've had similar problems but mine center more around OCD. These intrusive thoughts are NOT REAL, but because WE FEAR them; therein lies their power and are hard to shake off. We shouldn't be ashamed or upset, because it's just our minds in overdrive and possibly being triggered at a time when we are anxious or upset. I think it's us sensitive types that have more of a problem with intrusive thoughts. It's only our actions and not our thoughts that can bring about change in our lives. I feel this is a temporary problem for you and will resolve itself in time.
