Today my doc has given me 10 tablets of 5mg diazepam, twice a day, just enough to get me through. I have a family funeral coming up. I have the social avoidance issue on top of very severe panick attacks. Ive been this way for years.
I asked for a higher dose because i always end up last minute panicking and take more, which ive been told in horror that i shouldnt do.
is it okay to double the dose to 10mg the night before and on the morning of the funeral. ?? I dont want to have a glass of wine to calm me a bit more. I dont really drink, only on special occasions.

Sorry for your loss. I doubt anyone is going to offer advice contrary to your doctor.

Try and be ready with your exercises to counter your panic attacks. I wish you the best.
Thanks for this!

Thank you for replying. I was giving up on a reply. Yes i know all my breathing and thought focus excercises, i will try. Its just not the best time or place to be taking a full blown panic attack.

5mg doesnt help?
have you explained that to your doctor?

he's likely giving you 5mg because you dont use them regularly
Benzos can be hell, please take care

(10mg i dont think will kill you)

I take 20mg for sleep every night. 10mg won't kill you. As long as you don't stay on a high, constant dosage like my doctor has had me on for years (before I knew about involuntary addiction and hell they can wreck in withdrawals.)

I'm sorry for your loss. But 10mg won't kill you. I would be more worried about falling asleep or not being able to walk. Since 20mg for me is used for sleep, then 10mg might make someone sleepy like it does me but if you're not even used to 5mg constantly, you might not want to go up to 10mg.
Thanks for this!

With regards to any medication, one should always seek advice from their own General Practitioner. Only a medical professional with full access to your medical records can advise you on this matter. Good luck and take care.

Thanks to you all. Getting other peoples experiences is great, its the best way to help. Just what i was hoping for. The doc knows i still have anxiety on 5mg to the point i just want to run out of the situation, I do only get them very occasionally, maybe 2/3 times a year. I know for going to the dentist, its 2 a day then 1 tablet in the morning and another 2hrs before appointment, so yes 10mg wont kill me. As long as i dont fall asleep.. At the end of the day, its got to be a whole lot better than alcohol. Id rather stay well away from that trap.

Well the funeral is over. I took two 5mg tablets this morning, so glad i did, i was very nervous but nowhere near panic. They didnt make me over sleepy, just more relaxed. I hope this helps others to know that 10mg is okay just before an event of any kind.
Thank you again for all your replies, so very helpful.

I am prescribed 5mg as needed...and its for panic/anxiety attacks, but 5 mg does not cut it sometimes, so talked to my psychiatrist about it and she said it's fine if I take 10 mg in those instances. If 5 mg doesn't work for you tell the doctor that its not effective and see if they have other suggestions.

I wouldn't change anything without talking to your doctor first. I know it's hard, and funerals are especially hard, but do talk to your doc first.edit: I didn't realize that you posted that you'd already been to the funeral. I bet you're relieved that it's over! But, I'm sorry for your loss. Lots of hugs to you.
