I work at a small kennel that boards cats and dogs. All I do is feed, water, and potty all the animals, check in and check out all pets, and occasionally bathe them. Not that much of a high stress job right? Well for someone that has an anxiety disorder... It is the worst thing on the planet...
Even if it was just where I had to only feed hamsters, it would still be a job and I would still be scared spitless every time I go. I can't see my therapist anymore and he SAS remedy for these kind of situations. Any suggestions for relieving the anxiety?

I'm sorry you are experiencing so much anxiety. Have you tried breathing exercises? I find they really help when I get anxious. Of course, you have to practice when you aren't anxious so you can learn how and use it when the anxiety comes on. It's really pretty simple.
Just: Take a deep breath in through your nose to the count of 4. Hold your breath to the count of 7. Exhale through your mouth to the count of 8. I do this 10 times to relieve anxiety symptoms. It takes practice.

I'm sorry to hear you going through such a thing. I understand completely how it feels as I have problem doing everyday things (like shopping!) but have to force myself through it in any case.
I agree with gayleggg - breathing exercises help. I think it is because it is linked to mindfulness exercises. Initially it may not feel like much and you might have to do it multiple times a day, but the more you do it, the more benefit you will find out of it. I still have the problem that you describe, but I started meditating and it is starting to take the edge off. If you can find classes in your area with a teacher, this is probably the best way to be guided. Otherwise there are loads of free sources on the internet and audios you can stream which can guide you. |

Occasionally, I wonder if anxiety isn't worse in people that have high expectations of themselves or who are perfectionists (I have not looked into this, nor do I have a therapist, so apologies if this is something obvious or has been discussed before).
Job anxiety is anxiety...We want to be the best at what we do in case someone comes in and judges you. But we're only human and humans are imperfect creatures. If you can forgive the dogs and cats for mistakes, why can't you forgive yourself? I'm sorry I have no suggestions. Perhaps if you spoke to your boss and asked him how you are doing, it might help? If he/she tells you you're doing well, then you might at least be assured that you're good at what you do. Then you might forgive yourself a little. Make sense? |
