Hi, all.

Generally speaking, how long does generalized anxiety and panic disorder last? (Months, years, etc.) Or, rather, how long does the peak last? What has your experience been like?

Thank you!

I was diagnosed with "anxiety disorder" at age 13 or 14 officially, and I'm almost 23 now. It's different for everyone. But generally speaking, if you have an official diagnosis, meaning it's chronic, then chances are it could last years. That's been my personal experience. Peaks are something different, I don't really have "peaks", I have good days and bad days. I'm determined to not let it be a lifelong diagnosis for me.

Diagnosed in past year with both...sadly my symptoms have been with me since 20s or much much younger.... Late 30s now. I wish I'd started to get help sooner....

For panic what I will say is some medicines like Xanax help to "break the pattern"
- then become your safety medicine. You know you have it just in case.

GAD and extreme physical/mental anxiety... no idea yet. But I try to remain hopeful.

With therapy, some people get over it quickly. I've had it 30+ years, but only really decided on breaking the cycle recently. It's not easy, but something I could have overcome years ago if I'd tried making the necessary changes earlier. Taking a while doing it now, with all of these negative habits embedded deep, but I can at least see the light at the end of the tunnel, finally.

For me, anxiety is chronic. I'll probably always struggle with some aspect of it. I've learned coping skills, I'm in therapy, I'm on medication. That all makes the anxiety tolerable.

I essentially had panic disorder for several months, and it went away after therapy. I remember how easy it was to be thrown into a panic attack, but now i simply just dont have them.

As far as GAD or any anxiety disorder like that, im convinced that i have it and while there are lots of good coping strategies one can use, it always creeps back up on you. I wont even realize half the time that im over reacting or worrying about something until its too late. Its just how im wired lol

I have had GAD/OCD since I was about 6 or 7, it all started in the 1st grade. Im 17 now and then I had about 2 years of relief in the middle of the 10 years iv been diagnosed with it, the rest have have filled with anxiety and panic at peaks. So far it has never really gone away. I think its a life long illness, but I cant say for sure.
