Apparently someone has reported them in the building. Pest control wants to come in and inspect this week.

This is a huge trigger to my anxiety for me. We've had them before. They basically put your life on hold for 3 months until you finally get the all clear. I don't want to live out of plastic bags again.

And I am angry. I realize the individual who has them likely picked them up innocently - like from a seat at a movie theatre. Yet emotionally I feel they are responsible and I have a great deal of anger towards them.

Gosh, I just don't want to go through this again. It scares me.

Do you wanna fight? Bag your stuff, get you some DE (diatomaceous earth), profusely vacuum the box spring and mattress, bed bug covers, throw crap out and start over depending on how bad the infestation is, u got the eggs lol sorry....It can be done it might take a few minutes/months/years.....It is the worst, take your tax money and have your property frozen (google it ) approach to get rid of them guaranteed! lol, I'm just killing myself laughing over this post.

I thought bed bugs was just a phrase that was used like an idiom something imaginary until I moved up North and experienced it, seriously......It can be gotten rid of and your 3 am waking up and sensitive skin scratching can be resolved lol..

I feel your pain Rcat. Lets hope those little vampires stay out of your apartment. Bed bugs really can make your anxiety worst. I live in New York... A lot of them here! Even on public transportation. I last saw one in my apt last December. I end up sleeping on my uncomfortable leather couch... Because I was afraid to get bitten in my bed. I killed the bug then flush it. What you don't need is an infestation.

I've never tried this, but any time a friend of mine has trouble with his apartment (e.g., shower not working, broken windows etc.), he packs a bag, tells management he's checking into a hotel, and they'll be receiving the bill. It's worked for him on several different occasions. Just a thought.

I've had bed bugs before too, and they're a nightmare. I hope it gets taken care of soon.

Like I said, I've been through the ordeal before - so I know what to look for. I've been so anxious about this happening again that I still religiously do 'the check' every morning. I've seen no signs.

My property manager is thankfully on top of this and is having pest control perform a precautionary treatment i the whole building.

This is no laughing matter.

Yeah thats true.Bugs are really very horrible and harmful too.If you want to completely get rid of them then you should keep using pests controls to protect yourself and will not allow them to grow again and again.Along with this you can also get professional services from Pest Control Newtown CT that will be more effective.

UPDATE: none found!

They inspected and found nothing - which is what I told them (I know full well the signs). But they also did a precautionary treatment and spray. They will be back in two weeks to do another.

Thank goodness. Come and do all the preventative measures you want to - please. I just don't want to go through this again.

Incidentally if I were to have them I don't feel that moving is an option. I would only dispurse them and take them with me. They also say moving only lengthens the time you have them as, with not 'bait' to lure them out they go dormant and the treatments don't work as well. Yes it is horrible the idea of sticking around but it is the responsible thing to do.

Anyway. No signs. Whew!

I add eucalyptus oil to all my laundry. I buy it online by the gallon.

rcat: Congrats, and I just want to say I can understand how this would make you feel and it isn't a laughing matter. I have to move soon because my apartment is being renovated and they are raising the rent over $200. I started obsessing about how I will know if a new apartment has bedbugs and I lost half a night's sleep. I went online and certain places have been "called out" for having bed bugs, including what used to be my favorite hotel . In the apartment before this I battled mice. They nested in my couch and I had to get rid of it. I was catching them with a "catch and release" thingie and letting them go outside...a lot of them were baby mice. And I had a cat at the time! Go figure! When I got to this apartment I settled down and have loved living here. If I move to an apartment and it has bedbugs I think I may go insane! In the past I have lived in apartments with cockroaches (east coast of US, big city) and fleas in the apartment (CA) when I moved in. A big rental house I lived in had silverfish, which is a dreadful insect. And then the townhouse with the mice. I don't think I can deal with bedbugs. Any tips as to how I might be able to tell before moving in somewhere???

Is it really true you can pick up bedbugs at the movie theater? I read not to drag in furniture that has been set on the curb. That amused me because it is an old habit I guess I will have to give up. I would rather avoid buses. But really, should one avoid sitting down in public? Coffee houses? Restaurants? Church? Just reading this thread made me feel anxious. I am pretty phobic about insects. (I grew up in a big house infested with almost every insect and bug I knew including "thousand leggers", silverfish and termites, and also mice, because my parents didn't believe in pest control.) Definitely left its mark.

I'm sorry DechanDawa but you can pick them up from any sort of upolstery. They are not a sign of filth or poor housekeeping.

Having gone through it before my OCD has me checking on a daily basis. It was a very big trigger for me when they notified me they wnted to inspect (they also did a preventative treatment). So emotional was I that I am sure there is a PTSD component to it all (I do have PTSD from trauma and recognize the signs both physically and emotionally).

My sister got bed bugs twice. They are worse than any other kind of bug, worse than lice, harder to get rid of. She made me so crazy about getting them in hotel rooms, I try not to even travel. But, fortunately, I never got them. I check the mattress when I go to a hotel. They are visible.

Well, rcat, sounds like you are safe. I know that you moved into a new apartment, bigger and nicer than your last apartment, and I hope now you can settle into enjoying it.

I have decided I have to be philosophical about the bedbug thing. I know our town's homeless shelter was cited as having them. That's why I don't want to ride the bus, but if I have to I will stand or at the very least sit on the edge of my seat.
