I started a job as a cashier at the local supermarket at the end of June, and although I've only been working 8 days so far (I was away during July, so wasn't working then, and I only work 3 days a week normally) I'm already finding that I really dread going into work. I don't even know why, either - the staff are mostly very friendly, and I haven't had a difficult customer yet. In fact, when I'm actually at work, most of the time I don't mind it - it's not a bad job, except when it's very busy, because that tires me out, and when things go wrong, which is happening slightly less often now.
What's worrying me, though, is that I felt very similar about going into school, and that was as much due to the social situations it put me in as the actual work. I was in therapy for social anxiety earlier this year, and I really thought I was doing better now. Plus, every job I get is going to involve other people in some way - what if I end up feeling this way about all of them? __________________ Her name is Rio, and she dances on the sand... |

Sorry to hear that Rio.....how about thinking back to when you went in for therapy and what were some of the tools the T gave you to work through your anxieties? Sometimes we have to revisit what we learned from the past and apply to the present.
It can be a constant at times that we have to apply things we learned because they don't always become ingrained and automatic to us. I hope you find some ideas from the past that can help you now with your job! I wish you well (((((((((((((((((((((Rio))))))))))))))))))))) sabby |

(((((sabau2))))) Thanks. That's a good idea - the diaphragmatic breathing he taught me helped to some extent. It was mostly exposure therapy we were doing, though, and for some reason going to work doesn't seem to be getting easier the more I do it.

Ok....well then, I can't help you much on the exposure therapy but there are other ideas on how to get yourself through those anxiety attacks.....
How about conscious thought to yourself saying "This is only temporary, this will not last" or as soon as you feel yourself having diificulties, think of a comfortable place in your mind...something soothing and relaxing that you can go to. Getting yourself busy with the job at hand too and doing your best not to think about the anxiety and what is causing it can sometimes help you to move past it more quickly. I do understand that it is not an easy thing to get through at times. But I also know that practicing these options can help you to use them more comfortably in the future. Good luck hon! I also think that once you feel more adept at your job, it's possible your feelings of anxiety will not be as strong. As your job becomes more familiar to you, your comfort level should hopefully increase Hugsss sabby |

Thanks for the advice! That's true it may get easier after I've been doing the job a while, I guess 9 days isn't that long really...
