Hi all,
My GP has given me a prescription for Citalopram and referred me for counselling (which will take weeks to happen). I don't really want to take the meds because the packet says the anxiety may get worse for 2-3 weeks and side effects of nausea (which is my major panic attack sign). Is there anything natural I can take which has good scientific support? If I go on the Citalopram will it be long term? I can't keep paying out prescription charges forever! I have these attacks once or twice a week, is there anything I can do/take when they happen to calm me back down? Any help would be appreciated! |

NEVER self medicate - this includes not taking medication as prescribed. If you have a problem with the prescription, that is a conversation you should be having with your doctor.
Yes, it takes some time for medication to take it's effect. Most are actually in the 6-12 week range. Go back to your doctor and as I mentioned tell them you are concerned about the temporary side effects. Ask if there is another option. Ask about what you can do to cope in the interim. We can help you with some coping mechanisms here. My favourite is carrying around a 'worry stone' (it's really a pebble), But I also practise mindfulness; and, if I am really anxious, I use weight therapy (in my case it is a heavy bean bag I put on my shoulder). Again, I am really alarmed by your not taking your medication. You were prescribed it for a reason. I think you should give it a try. Speaking of which, I had great success with Citalpram. I was prescribed it as a transitionary 'tool' until I successfuly completed a CBT course. |

Ok, thank you. I have another appointment with them in 2 weeks. I will take it until then and we can discuss more then.
I always show a strong happy front and as such I never let anyone see when I'm struggling, not even my husband or my mum, so now I feel like I don't have anyone to talk to and I'm not sure where to find someone I can can talk to or even if I want someone to know that side of me. |

Agreed---- there is no scientific support because nobody can make $$$ off of any of those studies.
If you want to go the natural route----start researching. You won't get the in depth info you need from a forum post. |
