I wash my hands many, many times a day.
I constantly think that my hands are dirty & things I touch are dirty. I was my hands so much that they get red and raw looking. I'm just paranoid about things being clean, I also sometimes check to make sure the doors are locked more than I need to. I've told people I know about it. They all seem to think that it's all in my head and that I can stop, I just choose not to. But I can't stop these thoughts that my hands and other things are dirty. Now, I don't want to tell anyone else about it..not even my doctor. I think that people are going to think I'm crazy or something..even though, other than these odd obsessions, I'm completely normal. I don't know, can anyone give me their opinion? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. ![]() |

Sounds like classic OCD to me but that doesn't mean that it is. I'd see a therapist for an official diagnosis.
The good news is that you're not crazy. OCD, while not curable, is treatable. Be safe. Cyran0

Welcome to PsychCentral (PC), Pagirl123.
Yes, tell your doctor, just not others who can't understand or help you.

And hope your doctor understands or knows where to point you for help. If he/she doesn't, keep looking.

My OCD used to take the form of constant hand-washing, too. Huge fear of germs.
Are you functioning pretty well throughout your day--going to work/school, keeping up with responsibilities? You are not crazy. You may have a chemical imbalance. Lots of nice people have OCD. They're not crazy. It's not within your control. You can't control it just like you can't control your heart rate at will. The people who think it's all in your head simply don't understand. Read the book BRAIN LOCK. Get to a therapist who specializes in OCD. See a psychiatrist. If it's interfering with your daily life, then you need help. Nothing to be ashamed about. Let us know what happens. . .
